The complications inherent in the bibliographical description <strong>of</strong> editions <strong>of</strong> H<strong>of</strong>fmann<br />

von H<strong>of</strong>fmannswaldau‟s Deutsche Übersetzungen und Gedichte, which are made up<br />

<strong>of</strong> a bewildering variety <strong>of</strong> separate parts in different printings and <strong>of</strong> which the<br />

translation <strong>of</strong> the Pastor fido, in a slightly modified version, will, from 1679, form an<br />

integral part, are well documented by Beare and by Heiduk, though against 12<br />

editions <strong>of</strong> the collection published up to 1730 Dünnhaupt inexplicably lists only 6<br />

editions <strong>of</strong> the Getreue Schäfer, ignoring some <strong>of</strong> what his predecessors had to say on<br />

the subject.. He does not, for example, list any copies <strong>of</strong> a 1679 edition with<br />

„Gedichte‟ in the title, listing only copies with „Getichte‟ and giving „Gedichte‟ as a<br />

possibility only from 1704. (It is true that Beare, somewhat disarmingly, does not<br />

attach any great significance to the alternative spelling but this is too simplistic.) Nor<br />

does Dünnhaupt list any copies <strong>of</strong> the Getreue Schäfer after 1710. He does, however,<br />

distinguish between two distinct title-pages <strong>of</strong> 1679 with „Getichte‟, one with a<br />

pattern <strong>of</strong> type ornaments before the imprint, the other, later, one with a woodcut<br />

ornament. As a further complication the Imperial privilege, granted at the end <strong>of</strong><br />

1679, may be present, printed on one or on two leaves or as a double-page spread<br />

tipped in, as may the Saxon privilege, granted in 1681. Copies <strong>of</strong> the Getreue Schäfer<br />

were printed with and without the vignettes (again somewhat surprisingly Dünnhaupt<br />

does not list an edition without vignettes before 1689) and in some later copies, still<br />

with the date 1679, five full-page plates, one for each Act, were added. It is obvious,<br />

therefore, that these and other complications make a definitive description <strong>of</strong> all the<br />

likely variations impossible within the constraints <strong>of</strong> this list and, generally, I shall<br />

comment in detail only on those editions <strong>of</strong> the Deutsche Übersetzungen und<br />

Gedichte that I have seen. Further details may be gleaned from Beare‟s and from<br />

Heiduk‟s articles and from Dunnhaupt‟s bibliography. The most recent and most<br />

documented pronouncement on the problem, that <strong>of</strong> Klaus-Peter Möller in his article<br />

on „Die Fingerabdruckmethode‟, uses reproductions <strong>of</strong> patterns <strong>of</strong> ornaments to<br />

separate out the various printings <strong>of</strong> the text but I have not included these intermediate<br />

printings in my list. It is possible that some <strong>of</strong> the remaining conundrums were
