Contains, for the first time, a translation <strong>of</strong> the Prologo by Daniel Caspar von<br />

Lohenstein (Der vorredende Alpheus), which had originally been published as a<br />

footnote to lines 511-512 <strong>of</strong> Act II <strong>of</strong> that author‟s play, Sophonisbe (Breslau, 1680).<br />

Reprinted in Klaus Günther Just‟s edition <strong>of</strong> Lohenstein‟s Afrikanische Trauerspiele<br />

(Stuttgart, 1957), pp. 372-376. It is accompanied by the first <strong>of</strong> the Baur-Küsell<br />

vignettes (see note to 1679/1). The other vignettes are not present but the five fullpage<br />

plates are, as is the double-page engraved frontispiece by Sandrart. Some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

individual parts <strong>of</strong> the volume are dated 1686. A facsimile reprint <strong>of</strong> Lohenstein‟s<br />

translation, taken from the 1684 edition, can be found in 1993/2.<br />
