Procedures<br />

1. Refer students to the teacher-selected book on wetlands that was<br />

read during Topic 2, Session 2.1.<br />

2. Review with the students their responses to the bottom two<br />

statements on the Animal Reading Response sheet (pg. 18).<br />

3. Select a section in the book about one <strong>of</strong> the animals it describes.<br />

a. Ask students to close their eyes while you reread the page(s)<br />

about the animal you chose.<br />

b. Tell the students to picture the animal in its habitat, and listen<br />

for the describing words as you read the selected passage.<br />

-<strong>What</strong> animal was described?<br />

-<strong>What</strong> words were used to describe<br />

the animal(s)?<br />

-<strong>What</strong> rhyming words could you<br />

use to describe the animal and its<br />

habitat?<br />

-<strong>What</strong> kind <strong>of</strong> writing uses rhyming<br />

words?<br />

-Does all poetry rhyme?<br />

4. List the animal and the describing words on the board.<br />

5. If you have time, do the same thing with other selections in the<br />

book.<br />

6. Introduce the cinquain poem.<br />

7. Read an example <strong>of</strong> a cinquain.<br />
