• Mathematics should be taught through inquiry and real-world applications. Students<br />

should construct mathematical ideas through classroom discourse. When appropriate,<br />

development <strong>of</strong> new concepts may be necessary.<br />

Student Learning Expectations<br />

• Identify the components <strong>of</strong> different habitats within the fresh water, salt water,<br />

forest/woodland, and wetland ecosystems.<br />

• Measure length using nonstandard and standard units (meter, foot).<br />

• Calculate the area <strong>of</strong> a given space using nonstandard and standard tools.<br />

• Begin to understand why standard units <strong>of</strong> measurement are necessary.<br />

• Collect data and construct a graph representing the data.<br />

• Use a thermometer to record temperature.<br />

Procedure<br />

NOTE: The procedure in the topic sessions may be divided into several different lesson<br />

periods. Each session may take more than one lesson period to complete.<br />
