implementing these systems.
The last part of the report concerns measures
taken to mitigate Qatalum’s ecological
footprint. The report argues that the company’s
operations emphasise efficiency as the
first method of achieving environmental protection:
greater efficiency will lead to ‘greener’
operations. An environmental management
manual detailing sources of environmental impact
and Qatalum’s approach to tackling each
major area of focus, including climate change,
water consumption, and waste management.
Special focus is given to air quality and
emissions – the main environmental concerns
of any aluminium smelting facility. The high
levels of energy required for primary aluminium
production lead to high levels of GHG
emissions, which contribute directly to global
climate change. The report states that the
company tackles both of these issues via proactive
tracking and measuring of our emissions
and through active mitigation efforts to
reduce and minimise emissions.
Water conservation and waste management
complete the report, defining techniques
and guidelines to minimise water consumption
and to manage all types of waste produced
by Qatalum’s operations and facilities.
In January 2013 Qatalum and Dutco Mc-
Connell Dowell (Qatar) signed a USD28.5m
contract to construct the workshop which will
reline all pots reaching the end of their operational
life. The new facility will be outside
the existing Qatalum Phase 1 smelter. Qatalum
will lease this area from MIC. The contract includes
the following:
• Construction of land bridge between the
Qatalum smelter and the new site
• Relining buildings, with associated systems
and equipment
• Anode superstructure workshop, with
associated systems and equipment
• Offices, restrooms, with furnishing and
associated systems
• Cathode cooling and parking station
• Area for storage of spent pot lining (SPL)
containers.
An important part of the project consists of
reinforcing four of five existing ramps, and reinforcing
two additional quarter passageways
within the existing smelter potrooms.
Oman
OARC awards Fata EPC
turnkey EPC contract
The turnkey EPC contract being executed by
Fata EPC was awarded in April 2011, along
with gas and electrical transmission line contracts.
The anticipated project implementation
period was 31 months.
The plant will use a Hazelett Model AS
2000 twin-belt casting maschine which continuously
casts 2-metre wide strip at 50 tph. For
the inline tandem rolling mill configuration,
Fata Hunter is providing the hot rolling and
cold rolling mill as well as the tension levelling
line. Other equipment provided is as follows:
• Furnaces by GNA Alutech of Canada
• Filters by Stas Canada
• Coil annealers by Otto Junker, Germany
• Slitter by Kampf GmbH of Germany
• Roll grinding equipment by Tenova Pomini
of Italy.
This combination of machinery will enable
OARC to produce aluminium sheet in very
thin gauges and high surface quality, with
shorter product delivery time and low production
costs. The first coil set is for mid-August
this year.
The USD387m project is a full EPC lump
sum turnkey package for setting up a complete
aluminium flat production facility, and
will be the largest downstream user of metal
from Sohar Aluminium.
In July Sohar Aluminium signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) with PACI
to set up a training centre on the company’s
premises in Sohar for aluminium craft work.
PACI will provide trainers and study material,
while Sohar Aluminium will provide the faculties
and funding for the programme. The
centre will train selected women from lowincome
families in the local community in
aluminium craft manufacturing. The two-year
training programme is expected to enable
women to become entrepreneurs and to produce
aluminium handicrafts.
The Oman Aluminium Rolling Company
(OARC) will be a world-class light gauge sheet
rolling facility, with combined hot and cold
rolling and finishing operations. It is located
close to the Sohar Aluminium smelter in the
Sohar Industrial Area. The latest technology
in aluminium rolling will enable the plant to
use molten aluminium from the smelter for
manufacturing rolled coils.
Facing numerous challenges, construction
at the greenfield OARC site is progressing on
schedule, and the plant will be ready for partial
handover to OARC by August this year.
At full production, the OARC will employ
275 people and provide other employment
opportunities for many supporting businesses.
At the height of construction, 1,200 Fata employees
worked on the site to build the facility
and install the equipment. Fata’s total project
manpower is some 1,600 people throughout
the whole construction period.
After the handover in August, initial production
is scheduled to begin at a level of
around 55,000 tpy, with up to a five year
