Outotec wins order for liquid pitch storage from Emal
Dubal’s liquid pitch facility at Jebel Ali Port
Outotec provides leading technologies

As a technology supplier for the primary aluminium
industry, Outotec concentrates on
the design and supply of equipment, plant
and technologies for the carbon anode production.
The office in Cologne, Germany, is
the technology centre for green anode manufacturing
and related process areas, while the
office in Burlington, Canada, is the technology
centre for anode rodding shops and casthouse
equipment. The two offices work together,
with support from Outotec’s local market area
offices, such as Abu Dhabi, Shanghai, Kolkata,
Johannesburg
and St. Petersburg.
In 2012,
Emirates Aluminium
(Emal)
awarded an
EPC contract
to Outotec for
the design,
supply and installation
of the
third 10,000-
tonne liquid
pitch storage
tank at Dubal’s
raw materials facility at Jebel Ali Port. Dedicated
ships supply liquid pitch from abroad
to this facility where it is further distributed
to both the Dubal and Emal smelters.
The construction of the third liquid pitch
tank is to meet the liquid pitch requirements
of the Dubal and Emal smelters, especially
now that Emal has proceeded with the Phase
2 expansion of the
company’s green anode
plant.
For its new cell relining
facility, Emal
awarded another contract
to Outotec for
the design and supply
of a pot shell straightening
machine for
the straightening of
deformed pot shells
after they have been
taken out of service.
This machine is custom-designed
for the particular pot shells in
use at Emal. Outotec was able to demonstrate
its expertise in this field through an earlier
supply of a similar machine to Aluminij d.d.
Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
At the Vedanta Aluminium Ltd, Jharsuguda
smelter in Orissa India, Outotec was
awarded a contract in 2012 to supply a hydraulic
crusher for full size green and baked
reject anodes, for the Plant II smelter. This is
an EPC contract with Outotec India taking
care of the local portion of the work. Technically,
the contract is a repeat order as this
facility is very similar to the crusher project
supplied by Outotec for the original Jharsuguda
Smelter Plant I in 2007.
To offer complete carbon plant solutions,
Outotec cooperates with Riedhammer, Nuremberg
/ Germany – a well-known supplier
of anode baking technologies. Through this
partnership, Outotec is able to offer complete
carbon plants covering raw material handling,
green anode plants, bake furnace and anode
rodding shop.
