Die Golf-Region –
künftiges „Powerhouse“
der Aluminiumindustrie
The Gulf region –
future ‘powerhouse’ of
the aluminium industry
Wenige Wochen vor der Aluminium Middle
East 2013 in Dubai blicken wir im Special
dieses Heftes auf die Golf-Region. Die Aluminiumprojekte
der vergangenen Jahre waren
stark vom Ausbau der Hüttenindustrie geprägt
– nicht zuletzt dank der konkurrenzlos
günstigen Energiepreise, was die Entwicklung
dieses Branchensektors auch in den kommenden
Jahren vorantreiben wird. Ma’aden
Alcoa wird seine Ende 2012 in Betrieb genommene
Hütte im Laufe dieses Jahres auf
eine Jahresproduktion von 750.000 Tonnen
hochfahren. Der Hüttenausbau bei Emal ist
beschlossene Sache, die Produktionskapazitäten
werden bis Ende 2014 auf 1,3 Mio.
Tonnen fast verdoppelt. Alba wird seine Kapazitäten
in ähnlicher Größenordnung bis 2015
ausbauen. Die Golf-Region wird damit in
den nächsten Jahren zu einem „Powerhouse“
für die Produktion von Primäraluminium.
In Zukunft wird aber auch die Verarbeitung
zu Aluminiumhalbzeugen eine wichtigere
Rolle in der Golf-Region spielen. Im Strangpressbereich
gibt es bereits seit vielen Jahren
renommierte Werke, die hohe Qualitäten und
nicht nur für die Bauwirtschaft produzieren.
Erst jüngst sind dort weitere Investitionen in
moderne Strangpressen getätigt worden. Überhaupt
zeichnen sich die Investitionsprojekte –
egal, ob im Hüttenbereich oder in der Verarbeitung
– dadurch aus, das hoher Wert auf
erstklassige Anlagenqualität gelegt wird. Das
sieht man u. a. daran, dass vielfach angesehene
europäische Ausrüster beauftragt werden.
Neben die Produktion von Strangpressprodukten
tritt verstärkt die Herstellung von
Walzerzeugnissen. In Oman wird derzeit ein
Walzwerkskomplex mit Warm-, Kalt- und
Fertigstraße gebaut, der Mitte dieses Jahres
fertig gestellt sein soll. Die Anlage wird hochwertige
Produkte in dünnen Abmessungen
und hohen Oberflächengüten herstellen.
Ebenfalls dieses Jahr wird das Warm- und
Kaltwalzwerk von Ma’aden Alcoa in Saudi-
Arabien in Betrieb gehen und 2014 die Glühund
Beschichtungslinie für Automobil-Qualitäten
die Produktion aufnehmen.
Interessant ist in diesem Zusammenhang,
dass Jaguar Land Rover eine Machbarkeitsstudie
in Auftrag gegeben hat, die den Bau
eines Automobilwerks in Saudi-Arabien zum
Gegenstand hat. Das ist auch insofern interessant,
als die Premiummodelle des Autoherstellers
– Jaguar XJ und der neue Range
Rover – eine Aluminiumkarosserie haben
und der Autobauer in Middle East hohe Verkaufszuwächse
erwartet.
Die Golf-Region entwickelt sich und die
Aluminiumindustrie ist ein kraftvoller Motor
dieser Entwicklung.
A few weeks before Aluminium Middle East
2013 in Dubai, in the Special section of this
issue we are taking a look at the Gulf region.
There, the aluminium projects of the past years
have focused strongly on the extension of the
smelting industry – not least thanks to the incomparably
low energy prices in the region,
which will continue driving forward the development
of the sector for years. The Ma’aden
Alcoa smelter, which began operating at the
end of 2012, will boost its annual output
to 750,000 tonnes this year. The smelter enlargement
at Emal is now an accomplished
fact and its output will be almost doubled to
1.3m tonnes by the end of 2014, while Alba
will increase its capacity to a similar level by
2015. So in the coming years the Gulf region
will become a ‘powerhouse’ for the production
of primary aluminium: in a year or two
the region will be contributing around 15%
of global primary aluminium production.
In times to come, moreover, the processing
of aluminium semis will also play a more
important part in the Gulf region. In the extrusion
sector for many years already there
have been renowned plants which manufacture
high-grade products, and this not only
for the building industry. Just recently further
investments have been made in modern extrusion
presses. In general – and as much in
the smelting sector as in processing – such investment
projects have focused on first-rate
plant quality, as demonstrated inter alia by
the many orders placed with respected European
equipment suppliers.
Besides the production of extrusions the
manufacture of rolled products is also gaining
ground. In Oman a rolling plant complex
with hot and cold mills and a finishing line
is currently under construction and is scheduled
for completion by the middle of this
year. The plant will produce high-grade products
in thin dimensions and with excellent
surface quality. Also this year the Ma’aden Alcoa
hot and cold rolling plant in Saudi Arabia
will come on line and in 2014 the additional
heat treatment and coating lines for automobile-grade
products will start operating.
In this connection it is interesting that Jaguar
Land Rover has commissioned a feasibility
study on the building of an automobile
factory in Saudi Arabia. That is particularly
interesting since the premium models of the
car manufacturer – the Jaguar XJ and the
new Range Rover – have aluminium bodies
and the car manufacturer expects to see burgeoning
sales figures in the Middle East.
The Gulf region is developing apace and
the aluminium industry is a powerful driving
force of that development.
