7. Geysers in the bathrooms had been out of order for a few years. I took up
the matter with the Students’ Welfare Officer, HPKV, Palampur and he was
kind enough to sanction some money for the purpose. All the geysers were
made operational soon.
8. Cleanliness standard of the hostel was rather poor when I assumed charge.
At the first instance, I tried to motivate the students strongly in the matter.
There was a good response. Soon, I realized the necessity of placing one
dust-bin on each and every hostel corridor, common room, dining room, etc. I
approached the President, Inner Wheel Club (Mrs. Chhandra Kanwaljeet),
Palampur for some help in the matter. The help came and soon we were able
to arrange 12 beautiful bamboo dust bins and the same were soon placed in
all strategic areas of the hostel.
9. There were problems with wash basins, taps, bathroom mirrors, and flush
systems in the hostel toilets. All these items were soon got set right by my
persistent efforts.
10. There was overgrown grass all over the hostel premises when I joined. I
prevailed upon my staff as well as students to lend a helping hand to
beautity the surroundings. The help came in ample measure and the
premises soon received a face lift. Now it was our policy not to allow grass to
overgrow and maintain it low by regular attention. This also helped to
reduce the leopard menace/hiding in the area. The NSS In-Charge of the
College of Agriculture was requested to come to our rescue by arranging an
NSS camp for removing bushes near our hostel. A camp was organized and it
certainly improved the matter further. The In-Charge NSS was requested to
hold such camps in future also.
11. I took initiative to set up a Volley-ball court on the hostel promises. The
Students’ Welfare Officer was kind enough to provide the necessary facilities.
12. With a view to beautifying the premises, Mr. Ritesh Gupta, a senior student
volunteered his services. I encouraged the boy and appointed him as the In-
Charge, Land-scaping. He soon came up with an elaborate plan in
consultation with his expert teachers. The same was gradually translated
into action. The hostel gardener worked under his/our guidance. Some pretty
pots were procured and were planted with some beautiful material. These
were artistically placed at the hostel building entrance, gallery and the
passage leading to the common room.
