6 4. Professional Experience : 30 years It covers experience on account of teaching, research, extension, consultancy and administration. Recognitions Born on January 13, 1955 in the countryside of Himachal Pradesh, Dr. V. K. Suri, after completing his school education with high academic achievements, opted for higher studies in the field of Agriculture. His commitment to the development of Agriculture is amply evident by the fact that he obtained specialization in Soil Science and completed his Ph.D. degree with First Class from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur - a premier seat of learning in Science and Technology. In furtherance of agriculture sector, Dr. V. K. Suri started research in the area of improvement of soil physical conditions as Senior Research Assistant at the IIT, Kharagpur where he served from 1982 to 1986. 1992-2006 Dr. Suri carried out extensive research in the area of soil test crop response research. He carried out fertility gradient and soil test crop response experiments vis-à-vis integrated nutrient management covering maize, wheat, oilseeds, soybean and okra culminating into the development of fertilizer adjustment models for them. An experiment on fertility build up as a result of continuous prescription based fertilization was also completed. Verification trials for equations developed earlier were also conducted on farmers' fields. Demonstration experiments to popularize soil test based fertilizer use in oilseed crops were also carried out. Developed mycorrhizal biofertilizer (VAM) technology for rainfed maize, soybean, wheat and okra. Dr. Suri is presently engaged in water management research with special focus on water-nutrient interactions involving soil biota especially AM fungi. 1982-1992 Developed blue green algae technology for our rice farmers. Also developed integrated nutrient management technology for various rainfed crops such as maize, wheat, oilseeds, gram, peas, lentil, etc. Carried out experiments on crop responses to biofertilizers (Azospirillum, microphos inoculants/phosphate solubilizing microbes (PSM), Azotobacter, Rhizobium, etc. It is obvious from the above that Dr. Suri has been working in the area of • Enhancing fertilizer use efficiency of rainfed lands using organic manures, green manures and bio-fertilizers.
7 • Formulation of judicious fertilizer recommendations for various crops based on soil test values and yield targets. In addition to the above, Dr. Suri has been teaching various courses to the undergraduate and postgraduate classes for the last 10 years. He has also been actively involved in various types of, extension activities such as, delivering talks in farmers' camps, farmers' trainings, field days; delivering talks from All India Radio/Television and publishing extension/popular articles. 2006-08 Dr. Suri served as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of Chander Shekhar Azad University of Agri. and Technology, Kanpur (U.P.); conducted the affairs of the university efficiently for which he received appreciation from one and all. He did everything possible to turn the CSAUAT as one of the top State Agricultural Universities. 2008- till date Dr. Suri served as the Chief Scientist (Water Management) after his return from Kanpur assignment (VC, CSAUAT, Kanpur) for almost 2 years in 2 separate terms . He reoriented the technical programme of Water Management Project (ICAR) vis-à-vis enhancement of water and nutrient use efficiencies using innovative approaches. He has laid out field experiments on boosting water and phosphorus-use efficiency employing arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Dr. Suri has also initiated fertigation studies in the field, recycling harvested rain-water through drip and sprinkler irrigation systems. Since Jan. 25, 2010, Dr. Suri is more actively involved in teaching work including P.G. research guidance.
