At GfK, social class is defined as a combinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> educati<strong>on</strong> and the job sector <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

breadwinner. The reas<strong>on</strong> behind this is that occupati<strong>on</strong> is closely interrelated with income. A<br />

lot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> market research studies have shown that c<strong>on</strong>sumers provide unreliable answers<br />

regarding income related questi<strong>on</strong>s. GfK therefore decided to use a social class classificati<strong>on</strong><br />

scheme based <strong>on</strong> educati<strong>on</strong> and occupati<strong>on</strong>. The classificati<strong>on</strong> scheme used is the following<br />

(D represents the lowest class and A the highest class):<br />
