Western Australia<br />

According <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Visi<strong>to</strong>r Survey, in <strong>the</strong> year ended June 2011, 5,299,000<br />

domestic visi<strong>to</strong>rs stayed overnight in Western Australia. Of <strong>the</strong>se, 508,000 or 10<br />

percent of <strong>to</strong>tal domestic visi<strong>to</strong>rs stayed in a caravan park or commercial campground.<br />

They stayed for a <strong>to</strong>tal of 3,431,000 nights. A fur<strong>the</strong>r 291,000 or 5 percent of <strong>the</strong><br />

domestic overnight visi<strong>to</strong>rs stayed in a caravan or camped on private property for a<br />

<strong>to</strong>tal of 1,539,000 nights. 16<br />

According <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Visi<strong>to</strong>r Survey, in <strong>the</strong> year ended June 2011, <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

720,000 international visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> Western Australia. 17 Tourism Research Australia<br />

reported that 71,105 (just under 10 percent) of international visi<strong>to</strong>rs stayed a <strong>to</strong>tal of<br />

882,484 nights in a caravan park or commercial campground or camped on <strong>the</strong> side of<br />

<strong>the</strong> road, on private property or on crown l<strong>and</strong> or in a national park. 18<br />

Western Australia has a significantly larger proportion of caravan <strong>and</strong> camping<br />

establishments per capita than Queensl<strong>and</strong>, as does South Australia, Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Terri<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>and</strong> New South Wales. This could be attributed <strong>to</strong> having widely<br />

geographically dispersed <strong>to</strong>urism attractions across <strong>the</strong> state, suiting Western<br />

Australia <strong>to</strong> caravan <strong>and</strong> camping visitation.<br />

IBIS World reports that “86% of <strong>to</strong>tal domestic visi<strong>to</strong>r nights are spent in regional<br />

caravan parks. Country areas also account for 74% of international <strong>to</strong>tal visi<strong>to</strong>r nights<br />

spent in caravan parks.” 24<br />

Western Australia (in line with most of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r states) has just under 10 percent of<br />

<strong>the</strong> national population, <strong>and</strong> hosts 10 percent of <strong>the</strong> domestic caravan <strong>and</strong> camping<br />

visi<strong>to</strong>r nights <strong>and</strong> 11 percent of <strong>the</strong> International caravan <strong>and</strong> camping visi<strong>to</strong>r nights.<br />

Queensl<strong>and</strong> has just under 20 percent of Australia’s population though hosts 27<br />

percent of <strong>the</strong> domestic caravan <strong>and</strong> camping visi<strong>to</strong>r nights <strong>and</strong> 22 percent of <strong>the</strong><br />

international caravan <strong>and</strong> camping visi<strong>to</strong>r nights, as detailed in <strong>the</strong> table below 23 :<br />
