<strong>Nitec</strong> <strong>in</strong> Electrical Technology (Power & Control)<br />
COURSE SYNOPSIS<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the course, students should be able to<br />
• <strong>Design</strong>, <strong>in</strong>stall, repair, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>, operate, <strong>in</strong>spect and test<br />
electrical or supply <strong>in</strong>stallations where the operat<strong>in</strong>g voltage<br />
and approved load do not exceed 1,000 volts and 45 kVA<br />
respectively.<br />
• Install and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> electrical switchboards.<br />
• Ensure that electrical <strong>in</strong>stallations comply with relevant codes<br />
<strong>of</strong> practice for electrical <strong>in</strong>stallations and other related statutory<br />
requirements.<br />
• Produce electrical <strong>in</strong>stallation layout and s<strong>in</strong>gle-l<strong>in</strong>e diagrams.<br />
• Endorse on s<strong>in</strong>gle-l<strong>in</strong>e diagrams for electrical <strong>in</strong>stallations.<br />
• Install and program PLC for <strong>in</strong>dustrial control applications.<br />
• Install and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> electrical rotat<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es, associated<br />
control circuits and equipment.<br />
• Install and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> telecommunication and data wir<strong>in</strong>g<br />
systems.<br />
Remarks:<br />
Graduates who have acquired two years <strong>of</strong> relevant experience<br />
<strong>in</strong> the work performed by a licensed electrical worker would be<br />
eligible to apply to Energy Market Authority (EMA) to sit for the test<br />
lead<strong>in</strong>g to the award <strong>of</strong> an Electrician Licence issued by EMA.<br />
JOB OPPORTUNITIES<br />
<strong>Nitec</strong> <strong>in</strong> Electrical Technology (Power & Control) graduates are employed<br />
by government departments, statutory boards, electricity generation,<br />
transmission and distribution companies, manufactur<strong>in</strong>g plants, and<br />
companies deal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> M & E consultancy services, electrical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
works and build<strong>in</strong>g services. Some <strong>of</strong> the job titles held by graduates<br />
<strong>in</strong>clude Electrical Technician, Electrical Installation Technician, Electrical<br />
Power Technician, Electrical Equipment Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g Technician and<br />
Electrical Draughtsman. There are excellent opportunities for career<br />
advancement to supervisory positions and beyond. The challenge is<br />
for students to prepare themselves by upgrad<strong>in</strong>g their technical skills<br />
and knowledge by tak<strong>in</strong>g up higher-level courses.<br />
