MODULE OBJECTIVES<br />
Core Modules<br />
Rapid Transit Systems and Operations<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to identify and<br />
expla<strong>in</strong> the special features <strong>of</strong> driverless and driver-operated tra<strong>in</strong>s,<br />
railway eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g technologies, operation and facilities <strong>of</strong> rapid<br />
transit system <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore, <strong>in</strong>terpret eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g bluepr<strong>in</strong>t draw<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
produce, fabricate, repair and/or replace eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g components,<br />
pipes, seals, fitt<strong>in</strong>gs, bear<strong>in</strong>gs and coupl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> compliance with<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry standards and workplace safety regulations.<br />
Electrical Systems and Equipment<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
electrical circuits and equipment, motors, motor control circuits,<br />
electrical wir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stallations, earth<strong>in</strong>g systems, lightn<strong>in</strong>g and surge<br />
protection equipment as well as build<strong>in</strong>g fire protection and alarm<br />
systems.<br />
Electronics Systems and Equipment<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> analogue and digital electronics equipment as well as<br />
electromechanical control systems.<br />
Automation and Control Systems<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
pneumatic and electro-pneumatic systems and components,<br />
PLC systems and also operate and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g automation<br />
systems.<br />
Rapid Transit Power System<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to identify<br />
electrical hazards, implement electrical safety measures and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
electrical supply, distribution and control systems <strong>in</strong> rapid transit<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>s and stations.<br />
Roll<strong>in</strong>g Stock Systems and Equipment<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
batteries, air-condition<strong>in</strong>g, ventilation, electrical and electronic<br />
control, pneumatic, suspension and door control systems; cab<strong>in</strong><br />
equipment as well as Tra<strong>in</strong> Information Management System (TIMS)<br />
used <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Permanent Way and Tracks<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
permanent way parts and tracks as well as third rail and current<br />
collection systems for tra<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Industry Attachment<br />
Students will undergo 3 months attachment to <strong>in</strong>tegrate and apply<br />
a cluster <strong>of</strong> key technical, social and methodological competencies<br />
and ga<strong>in</strong> exposure and experience <strong>in</strong> the rapid transit <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
Life Skills Modules<br />
Life skills <strong>in</strong> broad terms are the foundation skills and personal<br />
qualities that an <strong>in</strong>dividual can transfer from one job sett<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
another to manage and adapt to changes <strong>in</strong> technology and work<br />
environments.<br />
Electives (Course Specific)<br />
Video Surveillance System<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to <strong>in</strong>stall, test<br />
and operate the video surveillance systems and equipment.<br />
Metrology<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to understand<br />
the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>spection and, verify and measure eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
components accord<strong>in</strong>g to technical draw<strong>in</strong>g us<strong>in</strong>g appropriate<br />
tools.<br />
Bear<strong>in</strong>g Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance Technology<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to apply the<br />
skills and knowledge to select, replace and diagnose anti-friction<br />
bear<strong>in</strong>g faults.<br />
Electives (Inter-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary)<br />
Workplace First Aid and CPR<br />
On completion <strong>of</strong> the module, students should be able to<br />
apply basic concepts and pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> first aid to render first<br />
aid treatment at the workplace and perform CPR dur<strong>in</strong>g an<br />
emergency.<br />
