Nitec in Medical Manufacturing Technology COURSE SYNOPSIS On completion of the course, students should be able to • Create multi-axis part program for Multi-axis Machining Centre and Milling Machine (HSM) using CAD/CAM system • Set up and operate Multi-axis Machining Centre and CNC High Speed Milling Machine. • Manufacture medical components such as dental implants, bone screws orthopaedic devices. • Assemble injection mould. • Perform mould setting and testing. • Develop mould design using CAD/CAM system. • Perform quality checks. • Perform preventive maintenance. SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING MODULE OBJECTIVES Core Modules Engineering Processes and Technology On completion of the module, students should be able to determine engineering requirements from technical blueprints and machine components in accordance with given specifications. Integrated 3D CAD/CAM On completion of the module, students should be able to create 3D CAD models and generate and verify CNC part programs using a CAD/CAM system for CNC lathes and CNC milling machines. CNC Technology On completion of the module, students should be able to set up and operate CNC lathes and CNC milling machines to produce components in accordance with given specifications. Product Planning and Development On completion of the module, students should be able to work in groups, plan and schedule a project, design digitalized models, manufacture the project in accordance with the requirements and document the project. Medical Machining On completion of the module, students should be able to develop multi-axis part programs, set up and operate CNC machining centres to manufacture medical devices such as dental implants, orthopedic screws, electronic connectors and watch components. Mould Assembly and Design On completion of the module, students should be able to assemble and set up injection moulds on the plastic injection moulding machine, carry out functional and acceptance tests, produce design documentation and replacements of mould components. Medical Manufacturing Project On completion of this module, students should be able to undertake projects in the manufacturing of medical devices. Industry Attachment On completion of the module, students should be able to acquire and apply a cluster of key technical, social and methodological competencies in their occupation. Life Skills Module Life skills in broad terms are the foundation skills and personal qualities that an individual can transfer from one job setting to another to manage and adapt to changes in technology and work environments. Electives (Course Specific) Assembly Skills On completion of the module, students should be able to select and use the correct hand tools for assembly and dismantle of mechanical components. Tool and Cutter Grinding On completion of the module, students should be able to set up the tool and cutter grinder to grind or recondition the blunt cutter according to supplier specifications. Advance Cutting Technology On completion of the module, students should be able to determine the correct cutting tools and machining parameters for the efficient machining of engineering material in both turning and milling operations. Electives (Inter-disciplinary) EDM (Diesink) On completion of this module, students should be able to operate EDM die-sinking machine to achieve nano accuracy in accordance with given specifications. Small Business Management On completion of this module, students should be able to identify a significant business opportunity, prepare a promotional package and conduct a sales event for a small business. Electives (General) Technical Mathematics (PEG) On completion of the module, students should be able to understand mathematical principles and to apply knowledge of engineering mathematics to solve problems in a clear and logical way.
