Knik Arm Crossing DraftFinal EIS Affected Environment Figure 3.46, the seventh key view, is of Sunset Park, in the Government Hill neighborhood. The view shows an open lawn area with picnic tables and play areas. The lawn is surrounded to the south by a forest of cottonwood trees that form a barrier to longer views to the south. Visual quality is moderately high given the pastoral setting provided by the lawn and bordering trees. Figure 3.47. Key view 8: Port of Anchorage, facing north The eighth key view (Figure 3.47) is from the western end of Ship Creek Point, which functions as the small boat harbor serving Anchorage boaters seeking access to Knik Arm. The location affords views to Knik Arm to the west and north, industrial development to the north and east, and the skyline of Anchorage to the east and south. The Chugach Mountains are visible in the background. The visual quality is high, given views to Knik Arm, adjacent wetlands and mud flats, and to the Anchorage skyline and the Chugach Mountains. The POA development imposes a conflicting visual element, but is below the skyline of Government Hill, which is in the middleground. 3-160 12/18/07

Key view 9: Ship Creek, facing north from the creek’s southern bank Figure 3.48, the ninth key view, is from the southern bank of Ship Creek looking toward the north from a location that would be just west of the proposed bridge crossing over the creek. The view shows vegetation bordering Ship Creek in the immediate foreground, with an open area adjoining a commercial building barely visible behind the trees located in the right portion of the image. The density of vegetation precludes views to industrial areas north of Ship Creek. Ship Creek Trail, under construction, is located along the banks of Ship Creek, passing through the area in this view. The view is typical of those in the Ship Creek corridor, with second generation growth of alder and cottonwood. Even though Ship Creek is partly visible through openings in the cottonwood and alder brush, visual quality is low–to-moderate because of the restricted views to foreground elements of little interest and the character of the adjoining World Trade Center commercial/industrial development. 12/18/07 3-161
