201. Many articles appeared <strong>in</strong> the polish Catholic press at the time on the<br />

ungratefulness of the Polish nation to God and to the Church.<br />

202. A place <strong>in</strong> the Carpathian hills, where the Congregation has a small vacation<br />

house for sisters and girls.<br />

203 Probably Sister Helen, who was the superior of the Rabka house. Sister Helen –<br />

Mary Urbanska, born <strong>in</strong> 1884, entered the Congregation <strong>in</strong> 1908. She was a nurse and <strong>in</strong><br />

1932 took over management of the newly acquired house at Rabka. She died at Rabka on<br />

August 6, 1940.<br />

204. “Remember” – a prayer to St. Joseph said daily by the whole Congregation.<br />

205. Perhaps one of the Benedict<strong>in</strong>e Fathers, Kazimierz Ratkiewicz (1906-1965), who<br />

was a friend of the sisters <strong>in</strong> Rabka. The first group of Benedict<strong>in</strong>es arrived <strong>in</strong> Poland <strong>in</strong><br />

1936 and settled <strong>in</strong> the “Jaworzyna” villa <strong>in</strong> Rabka, not far from the hourse of the<br />

Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy called “Loretto.” The Fathers regularly said Masses<br />

there, and Father Ratkiewicz busied himself with hear<strong>in</strong>g the sisters‟ confessions. He was<br />

great friends with “Loretto,” and it is very likely that it was he who heard Sister Faust<strong>in</strong>a‟s<br />

confession.<br />

206. The novena which is <strong>in</strong> the Diary was published, with some changes, <strong>in</strong> a<br />

pamphlet called Chrystus Krol Milosierdzia (Christ K<strong>in</strong>g of Mercy) <strong>in</strong> 1937, by the J. Cebulski<br />

Press, Cracow. The cover had a colored picture represent<strong>in</strong>g the Merciful Christ with the<br />

rays and the <strong>in</strong>scription “Jezu, ufam Tobie” (“Jesus, I trust <strong>in</strong> You”). Thecontents <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

the Novena to The Div<strong>in</strong>e Mercy, the Litany and the Chaplet.<br />

The superior of the Cracow house, Mother Irene Krzyzanowska, sent out the leaflet to<br />

the other houses of the Congregation. The sisters said the prayers privately, but did not<br />

know their orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

207. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Congregation‟s custom, the parlor was entered by the superiors<br />

or by sisters appo<strong>in</strong>ted for that function. Other sisters could go to their guests only by<br />

permission of the superior of the house.<br />

208. Reference is to the imprimatur of two publications: 1. An image of Jesus with<br />

the Chaplet to The Div<strong>in</strong>e Mercy on the back, for which Fr. Sopocko obta<strong>in</strong>ed permission <strong>in</strong><br />

Vilnius on Sept. 1, 1937 (No. R. 200/ 37); 2. A small pamphlet under the title Chrystus Krol<br />

Milosierdzia (Christ K<strong>in</strong>g of Mercy), which <strong>in</strong>cluded the novena, the chaplet and the litany to<br />

The Div<strong>in</strong>e Mercy. The imprimatur was granted by the Metropolitan Curia <strong>in</strong> Cracow (L.<br />

671/37). Both were published by the J. Cebulski Publish<strong>in</strong>g House, 22 Szewska St., Cracow.<br />

209. It is likely that the writer mistakenly recorded August <strong>in</strong>stead of September.<br />

210. Sister Faust<strong>in</strong>a calls the gate a “desert” because the gatekeeper rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

separated from the rest of the Congregation dur<strong>in</strong>g most of the day.<br />
