stress fields along <strong>the</strong> <strong>fiber</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>terface</strong> (85,86).<br />
To alleviate <strong>the</strong><br />
questions <strong>and</strong> problems associated with <strong>the</strong> aforementioned factor <strong>and</strong> also<br />
with <strong>the</strong> general aspects <strong>of</strong> elastic recovery <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> impressions,<br />
alternative <strong>in</strong>dentor geometries have been <strong>in</strong>vestigated.<br />
Some work has<br />
been completed us<strong>in</strong>g a rounded-tip diamond <strong>in</strong>dentor <strong>and</strong> a flat tungsten<br />
rod to apply loads to <strong>fiber</strong>s,<br />
In <strong>the</strong> first case, st<strong>and</strong>ard Vicker's<br />
<strong>in</strong>dentors are carefully rounded us<strong>in</strong>g a flat diamond-impregnated gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />
wheel. This method has been successfully applied to carbon <strong>and</strong> glass-<br />
<strong>fiber</strong>-re<strong>in</strong>forced plastics. The second method utilizes a f<strong>in</strong>e tungsten<br />
po<strong>in</strong>t flattened to produce a 50-pm-diam face (161).<br />
The <strong>in</strong>dentor has<br />
been used to apply loads to <strong>the</strong> relatively large 140-prn diam AVCQ CVD Sic<br />
filaments embedded <strong>in</strong> a glass <strong>matrix</strong>. The major disadvantage <strong>in</strong> this<br />
case is that <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dentor <strong>and</strong> <strong>fiber</strong> must be perfectly<br />
parallel dur<strong>in</strong>g push-out. The test is <strong>in</strong> its earliest stages <strong>of</strong><br />
development; thus, results are <strong>in</strong>conclusive.<br />
Questions arise concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> test specimens.<br />
Cutt<strong>in</strong>g, gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> polish<strong>in</strong>g probably disturb <strong>the</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>terface</strong>. The<br />
tested <strong>fiber</strong> must also be perpendicular to <strong>the</strong> surface, which poses a<br />
number <strong>of</strong> potential problems <strong>in</strong> multidimensional re<strong>in</strong>forced systems.<br />
The<br />
load must also be placed as close to <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>fiber</strong> as possible.<br />
Off-center load<strong>in</strong>g complicates <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> forces, lead<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
erroneous results.<br />
The low values <strong>of</strong> frictional stress for <strong>the</strong> composite samples con,-<br />
ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g carbon-coated Eibers agrees well with <strong>the</strong> measured shear <strong>of</strong> 2 MPa<br />
for <strong>the</strong> Nicalon re<strong>in</strong>forced LAS glass-<strong>ceramic</strong> composites (88). The<br />
specimens hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lowest frictional forces exhibited gradual
