Appendix F Code for Fitting Index of Refraction to Transmission Data The following is a listing of the code used to extract the index of refraction of Ga~ from the transmission data through GaN / Ah03 . This prograrr. is a variation of the amoeba. c simplex optimization program found in Numerical Recipes in C [120j. The program performs a least squares fit of the transmission data to the calculated transmission of of light through GaN /A1 2 0 3 (see section -1.2.2). I have used a variation of this program for all of the curve fitting and analysis in this thesis. I have found this routine to be very robust and have not had any problems with convergence to local minimum. as opposed to global minimum. I have verified this by changing the starting point of the fit and observing convergence to the same fitting value. The code is compiled as g++ fit_n.cpp ranO.c nrutil.c -1m -0 fit_n and the code is execut0d as unix_prompt> fit_n 227 Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
