5.0 STUDY AREA SUBWATERSHEDS<br />

As previously noted, the following five subwatersheds drain the MESP Study Area:<br />

Brougham Creek, Urfe Creek, Ganatsekiagon Creek, West Duffins Creek and Whitevale<br />

Creek. Figure A2.2 illustrates the extent <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> these subwatersheds in the MESP<br />

Study Area. A brief description <strong>of</strong> each subwatershed is provided below. Further details<br />

are outlined in the MESP Phase 1 Report (August 2008).<br />

From east to west the MESP Study Area subwatersheds include:<br />

• Brougham Creek is a subwatershed located within the East Duffins Creek<br />

Subwatershed. A small portion <strong>of</strong> its drainage catchment is located in the northeast<br />

corner <strong>of</strong> the MESP Study Area, east <strong>of</strong> Brock Road and west <strong>of</strong> Sideline 16.<br />

Brougham Creek originates on the glacial till plain that overlies most <strong>of</strong> the MESP<br />

Study Area. Within the MESP Study Area, Brougham Creek is classified as small<br />

riverine warm water system. Further downstream, before its confluence with Spring<br />

Creek, it is classified as small riverine cold water system.<br />

Within the Brougham Creek subwatershed, the dominant existing land use is<br />

agricultural, with natural areas interspersed. Less than 5% <strong>of</strong> the land use is<br />

urbanized. The majority <strong>of</strong> the riparian cover along Brougham Creek within the<br />

MESP Study Area is forest, with some pockets <strong>of</strong> meadow and wetland.<br />

This subwatershed drains surface flows from approximately 80 hectares <strong>of</strong> the<br />

MESP Study Area.<br />

• Urfe Creek is a large tributary subwatershed <strong>of</strong> Duffins Creek<strong>of</strong> Ganatsekiagon<br />

Creek, which discharges into East Duffins Creek downstream <strong>of</strong> the MESP Study<br />

Area. A large portion <strong>of</strong> its drainage catchment is located within the MESP Study<br />

Area, west <strong>of</strong> Sideline 16 and east <strong>of</strong> Sideline 22. Urfe Creek originates on the<br />

glacial till plain that overlies most <strong>of</strong> the MESP Study Area below which it flows over<br />

the shoreline <strong>of</strong> an ancient lake (glacial Lake Iroquois) and on through the lake’s<br />

beach deposits.<br />

The valley <strong>of</strong> Urfe Creek is dominated by mature mixed and coniferous forest,<br />

interspersed with thicket, wetland and meadow. Several areas show evidence <strong>of</strong> past<br />

disturbance associated with agricultural land uses.<br />

This subwatershed drains surface flows from approximately 650 hectares <strong>of</strong> the<br />

MESP Study Area.<br />

• Ganatsekiagon Creek originates on the glacial till plain, that overlies most <strong>of</strong> the<br />

MESP Study Area, immediately before it flows over the shoreline <strong>of</strong> Lake Iroquois<br />

and on through the lake’s beach deposits. A large portion <strong>of</strong> its drainage catchment<br />

is located within the MESP Study Area, west <strong>of</strong> Sideline 22 and east <strong>of</strong> Sideline 26.<br />
