Special Admission Requirements<br />
Scores from the Graduate Record Exam or GRE (at the discretion of the department)<br />
may be required. The GRE is mandated for students with an undergraduate<br />
GPA below3.0/4.0.<br />
An undergraduate History major or a strong minor.<br />
Completion of the application process (submission of official transcripts of all<br />
undergraduate work, three recommendations, a 300 to 500-word essay on why<br />
the student wishes to attend graduate school and a completed on-line application<br />
form). The student may take as many as 12 credits in a temporary or postbaccalaureate<br />
status prior to being admitted to the program.<br />
Degree Requirements<br />
Non-Thesis option (33 cr.) divided into primary area (27 cr.) and related area<br />
(6 cr.). Related areas need not be in History. All classes must be 50000- or<br />
60000-level.<br />
At least 12 credits of History at 60000 level.<br />
Written and/or oral comprehensive examinations after completion of coursework.<br />
Thesis option (30 to 33 cr.) divided into primary area (24 to 27 cr.) and related<br />
area (6 cr.). Related areas need not be in History. All classes must be 50000-or<br />
60000-level.<br />
At least 12 credits of History at 60000 level, including at least three credits of thesis<br />
enrollments.<br />
Completion of a thesis, in accordance with criteria of the Graduate School.<br />
Defense of thesis.<br />
Transfer of Credit<br />
No more than two courses from another accredited institution.<br />
