Undergraduate Studies in Education<br />

The School of Education offers a variety of undergraduate and licensure programs<br />

through its Department of Teacher Preparation Office located in the Gyte Annex,<br />

Room 151 and 153, (219) 989-2360.<br />

The following is a list of undergraduate degrees and licensing programs at the<br />

undergraduate level. Please be advised that programs are subject to change. It<br />

is the student’s responsibility to work with the appropriate advisor to keep<br />

updated on any new requirements or changes.<br />

Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education and Special Education (Gr. K-6);<br />

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, Secondary Education (Gr. 5-12);<br />

Majors in biology, chemistry, English,<br />

French, mathematics, physical science, physics, Spanish and social studies<br />

teaching with intense areas in economics, government, historical perspectives,<br />

psychology, sociology.<br />

Note: The courses that are taken at <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong> are created specifically tomeet Indiana<br />

teacher education standards. For that reason, they are subject to change should licensing requirements<br />

change. To be licensed to teach in another state, you must contact the state Department of Education for<br />

their requirements. See their website for information.<br />

Introductory course work:<br />

GATE 1:<br />

EDPS 22000 Psychology of Learning;<br />

EDFA 20000 History and Philosophy of Education;<br />

EDPS 26000 Introduction to Special Education;<br />

Gate 2: Admission to Advanced Pre-methods courses<br />

To be eligible to register for Gate 2 courses, candidates must provide documentation<br />

of passing praxis I scores, have achieved a portfolio score of 1.5, have earned a<br />

3.0 GPA, and demonstrated acceptable dispositions.<br />

Admission, Retention and Licensure Standards for all<br />

Teacher Education Programs<br />

Gate 3: Admission to Methods Courses<br />

A candidate seeking teacher licensure through <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong>, including<br />

student teaching, must be admitted to Methods courses by meeting the following<br />

minimum standards:<br />

1. Be enrolled at <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong> in good standing.<br />

2. Have completed Introductory courses and be registered for remaining<br />

courses in the following sequence:<br />

EDFA 20000 — History and Philosophy of Education<br />

EDPS 22000 — Educational Psychology (3)<br />

EDCI 35500 — Teaching and Learning in the K-12 Classroom<br />

EDPS 26000 — Introduction to Special Education<br />

EDPS 27000 — Characteristics of Individuals with Mild Disabilities<br />

EDCI 31100 — Media for Children<br />

EDCI 36600 — Use of Assessment in the K-12 Classroom<br />

3. Minimum grade indexof 3.0 GPA with no grade lower than a C in<br />

Education Courses<br />

4. Minimum grade indexof 3.0 GPA with no grade lower than a Bin English<br />

composition courses.<br />

5. For elementary majors, minimum grade of Band C in two of the required<br />

math courses. One of the courses MUST be MA 13700, and the other may be<br />

either MA 13800 or MA 13900. The remaining mathematics class must be<br />

completed with a C or better within a year of admission and prior to taking<br />

EDCI 31500. Students who earn grades of D, F, or Win MA 13700, must<br />

successfully complete MA 02100 before attempting MA 13700 a second time.<br />

6. 3.0 graduation indexwith no Ds or Fs.<br />

7. Licensure scores on all three sections of Praxis I: (Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST);<br />

Passing Scores (written/electronic): Reading (176/323), Math (175/320),<br />

Writing (172/318) or a combined score of 527or SAT 1100 or ACT 24 prior to registration<br />

in GATE 2 courses: EDCI 35500, EDPS 27000, and EDCI 31100 (elementary<br />

education), EDCI 36600.<br />

8. After completing a first education course, have withdrawn from or repeated<br />

no more than two courses.<br />

9. Acceptable electronic portfolio.<br />

10. No more than two Education courses with a grade of C.<br />

11. Must be coded in the elementary or secondary education major.<br />

12. Must display appropriate dispositions.<br />

13. Application for admission must be submitted to the Department of Teacher<br />

Preparation Office (Gyte Annex, Room 151) on or before February 1st for<br />

spring semester admission and September 1st for fall semester admission.<br />

Retention Standards for the Teacher Education Program<br />

Admission to methods courses does not insure retention in the program or approval<br />

for the professional semester. Each candidate’s progress will be reviewed<br />

by the advisor semester by semester. To be retained in the methods courses, the<br />

candidate must meet the following requirements:<br />

1. Be enrolled at <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong> in good standing.<br />

2. Maintained a minimum grade indexof 3.0 with no grade lower than<br />

a C in Education courses.<br />

3. Maintained a 3.0 graduation indexwith no Ds or Fs.<br />

4. Completed no more than two Education courses with a grade of C.<br />

5. After completing a first education course, have withdrawn from or repeated<br />

no more than two courses.<br />

6. Demonstrated acceptable dispositions.<br />

If a candidate is found to be in violation of any retention standard, the candidate<br />

will be placed on probation for the Teacher Education Program. The candidate<br />

will be notified by the academic advisor of this status and will not be allowed<br />

to proceed further in the Teacher Education Program until any deficiency is<br />

eliminated. The candidate will have one year to remove the deficiency. If after<br />

one year the deficiency is not resolved, the candidate will be removed from the<br />

Teacher Education Program.<br />

Gate 4: Admission to the Professional Semester (Student Teaching)<br />

If a candidate is found to be in violation of any retention standard, the candidate<br />

will be placed on probation for the Teacher Education Program. The candidate<br />

will be notified by the academic advisor of this status and will not be allowed<br />

to proceed further in the Teacher Education Program until any deficiency is<br />

eliminated. The candidate will have one year to remove the deficiency. If after<br />

one year the deficiency is not resolved, the candidate will be removed from<br />

the Teacher Education Program.<br />

4. Maintained appropriate graduation indexin secondary content.<br />

5. Completed no more than two Education courses with a grade of C.<br />

6. After completing a first education course, have withdrawn from or repeated<br />

no more than two courses.<br />

7. Submitted an updated Expanded Criminal History Report.<br />

8. Have taken required Praxis II exams<br />

9. Have completed portfolio requirement.<br />

10. Have displayed appropriate dispositions.<br />

Appeal Process for Admission and Retention Standards<br />

A candidate may choose to appeal a denial to methods courses or the Professional<br />

semester if they have special circumstances that they feel have prevented them<br />

from completing all the requirements for admission. All appeals for admission to<br />

methods courses and the Professional Semester must be sent to the Teacher Preparation<br />

Appeals Committee. The Appeals Committee is made upof three faculty/<br />

staff from the School of Education. Each member will serve on the committee for<br />

one academic year. The following steps must be taken in order to submit information<br />

to the Appeals Committee:<br />

1. Complete a request form for the Appeals Committee. This form may be<br />

obtained from the Department of Teacher Preparation Office (Gyte Annex,<br />

Room 151).
