The Master’s degree program within the Department of Communication and<br />
Creative Arts at <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong> offers a broad range of courses covering<br />
theories and research methodologies in the following areas: mass communication,<br />
interpersonal communication, organizational communication, performance<br />
studies, political communication, and rhetoric. The program is highly flexible and<br />
allows each graduate student to plan his/her course of study in consultation with<br />
a graduate faculty or advisor. After admission into the program, students will<br />
meet with advisor to determine their course of study based on their interests and<br />
professional goals.<br />
The program was originally designed to meet the needs of individuals who<br />
live and work in northwest Indiana and who want to complete advanced courses<br />
of study in communication studies. Today, a diverse student body--including<br />
international--is enrolled in the program. Numerous graduate students have<br />
successfully completed the program to qualify for career advancement, to prepare<br />
for doctoral study, or a satisfy their own curiosity about the most fundamental<br />
human behavior:<br />

Admission Requirements (Degree seeking students)<br />

4. Two copies of official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended<br />

Admission Process<br />
Official Admission<br />
1. An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0, based on a 4.0 scale.<br />
2. An undergraduate degree in Communication, related disciplines, or<br />
strong minor.<br />
3. Completion of regular application process (application form, application fee,<br />
2 copies of official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, 3 letters<br />
of recommendation, statement of purpose).<br />
Conditional Admission<br />
1. A prospective student whose overall undergraduate GPA is below3.0, may be<br />
admitted conditionally. He/she is required to maintain a 3.0 graduate indexfor<br />
the first 9-12 credit hours in order to continue in the program. The department<br />
may pose other requirements for official admission.<br />
2. Any prospective student may enroll in graduate-level courses, prior to applying<br />
for official admission into the graduate program, by completing a temporary<br />
(Post-Baccalaureate application form (on-line). These courses (limited to 4<br />
graduate-level courses or 12 credit hours) may be applied toward the degree<br />
requirements upon official admission.<br />
Required Coursework<br />
1. All graduate students must complete either COM 58200 or COM 58400<br />
regardless of their program emphasis.<br />
2. A total of 36 credit hours are required for completion of the master’s program.<br />

9 hours of Application/Research Methods courses<br />
15 hours of elective work<br />
Students may take graduate level courses outside the department in consultation with their advisors.<br />
Please note that nomore than 9 hours may be taken outside the department.<br />
Students are permitted twoindependent studies/directed readings in the course of their studies, which<br />
will be listed as a COM59000 course.<br />
Student may take nomore than 6 credit hours at the 40000 level in consultation with their advisors.<br />
Advisor Selection/Examination Committee<br />
1. Upon completion of 9 credit hours, student must select a graduate faculty<br />
mentor/advisor (examination committee chair).<br />
2. The student and the advisor will plan a course of study for the remaining<br />
27 credit hours.<br />
3. Prior to the completion of the 24th credit hour, students must select two<br />
remaining committee members for their advisory committees.<br />
4. The student and the committee will discuss and determine an appropriate<br />
graduation examination format. Usual options include:<br />

Thesis<br />
Transfer of Credits<br />
No more than 9 credits (3 courses) from other accredited institutions, taken<br />
within 10 years prior to completion of degree program, may be accepted at the<br />
discretion of the Department.<br />
