4.1 Lesson Plan<br />

Time: 2 hours<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g Objectives:<br />

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:<br />

• Identify and describe what concerns mothers/caretakers may have about<br />

immunization<br />

• Recognize factors that <strong>in</strong>fluence whether mothers/caretakers may br<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

children <strong>for</strong> immunization<br />

• Expla<strong>in</strong> the most important characteristics of effective communication <strong>for</strong><br />

immunization<br />

• List and convey the key messages caretakers need to know about<br />

immunization<br />

• Describe current community & health worker attitudes and expla<strong>in</strong> how they<br />

impact immunization coverage.<br />

• Use/employ structures and ways to mobilize the community to <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

demand <strong>for</strong> and use of immunization services.<br />

Preparation <strong>in</strong> advance by facilitator:<br />

• Read and familiarize yourself with Module 4<br />

• The facilitator should first carefully read this lesson plan and understand<br />

activities very well.<br />

• Prepare flipcharts (1,2,3)<br />

• Make 4 copies of the “Story of Wubalem & Tigist” (1)—story can be read<br />

aloud to participants if copies not available.<br />

• Prepare Situation cards (1,2)<br />

• Select participants to help <strong>in</strong> role plays and do a brief practice (1,2,3)—make<br />

copies of role plays those who will participate <strong>in</strong> them<br />

• Note: See Section 4.2 <strong>for</strong> preparation of flipcharts, situation cards, story and<br />

role plays<br />

Homework/assignment <strong>for</strong> participants be<strong>for</strong>e the session:<br />

• Participants should read the entire reference Module 4 the even<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>for</strong>e the<br />

session<br />

Materials:<br />

• Flipchart, vacc<strong>in</strong>ation diplomas, cards<br />
