Example of data used to calculate annual vacc<strong>in</strong>ation coverage<br />

a) Calculate <strong>in</strong>fants surviv<strong>in</strong>g to 12 months of age:<br />

Calculate the births, <strong>in</strong>fant deaths, and <strong>in</strong>fants surviv<strong>in</strong>g to 12 months of age? (This<br />

becomes the denom<strong>in</strong>ator <strong>for</strong> calculat<strong>in</strong>g coverage.)<br />

Total woreda population: 25,000<br />

Crude birth rate: 40 live births per 1000 population per year<br />

Infant mortality rate: 125 <strong>in</strong>fant deaths per 1000 live births per year<br />

Use the <strong>for</strong>mulas:<br />

• Total births per year = 25,000 population X 40/1000 = 1000 births<br />

• Total <strong>in</strong>fant deaths per year = 1000 births X 125/1000 = 125 <strong>in</strong>fant deaths<br />

• Total births per year – total <strong>in</strong>fant deaths per year = total surviv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fants per<br />

year<br />

Answer: There<strong>for</strong>e, 1000 births per year – 125 <strong>in</strong>fant deaths = 875 surviv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fants.<br />

b) Calculate annual vacc<strong>in</strong>ation coverage:<br />

DPT1 vacc<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> the woreda: 437<br />

Number of surviv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fants: 875<br />

Use the <strong>for</strong>mula:<br />

DPT1 coverage (%) <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>fants = annual # of doses of DPT1 given to <strong>in</strong>fants X 100<br />

number of surviv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fants<br />

Answer: DPT1 coverage (%) <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>fants = 437 X 100 = 50%<br />

875<br />

For practical purposes, <strong>in</strong>fant coverage <strong>for</strong> each vacc<strong>in</strong>e and dose is calculated as<br />

above.<br />

Report<strong>in</strong>g per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>in</strong> terms of vacc<strong>in</strong>ation coverage:<br />

Assume that last year the population of surviv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fants <strong>in</strong> your woreda was 800.<br />

Last year you set a target to vacc<strong>in</strong>ate 600 of them with each vacc<strong>in</strong>e. You<br />

succeeded <strong>in</strong> vacc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g 400 with DPT3.<br />

What was your immunization coverage rate last year?<br />

a) 50%<br />

b) 67%<br />

c) other<br />

answer: 50%<br />
