The Story of Wubalem and Tigist<br />
Wubalem had just returned home from fetch<strong>in</strong>g water. She was tired as the<br />
pump is far from her home. Her eldest daughter, Fatuma, was watch<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
baby, Tefera.<br />
Fatuma told her mother that she had heard an announcement that morn<strong>in</strong>g about<br />
immunizations be<strong>in</strong>g held today <strong>in</strong> the kebele. Wubalem had already brought<br />
Tefera to immunizations once be<strong>for</strong>e and the health worker told her the last<br />
time that she should br<strong>in</strong>g her baby back <strong>for</strong> more immunizations. Wubalem<br />
quickly put Tefera on her back and went to the immunization place with the<br />
immunization card.<br />
On her way, she ran <strong>in</strong>to her neighbor Tigist. She had a baby about the same age<br />
as Tefera, though her baby had never received any vacc<strong>in</strong>ations. Tigist told<br />
Wubalem that she went to have her baby immunized because she heard that it<br />
would protect her baby, but when she arrived some other women told her that<br />
the health workers had already left. Tigist said that it probably wasn’t that<br />
important anyway. But Wubalem remembered that the health worker said that<br />
immuniz<strong>in</strong>g her baby was important. Not know<strong>in</strong>g who to believe, Wubalem<br />
walked back home wonder<strong>in</strong>g what to do next...<br />
...back at the health center, the nurse who went <strong>for</strong> outreach that day reported<br />
to the center head about the days outreach activities. The health worker said<br />
that he was disappo<strong>in</strong>ted by the low turnout of women:” mothers <strong>in</strong> that Kebele<br />
just don’t understand the importance of immuniz<strong>in</strong>g their children”...<br />
