Sablefish Pots<br />

Sablefish pots are fished in strings weighted with anchors at<br />

each end and marked at the surface with buoys and<br />

flagpoles. The pots are rectangular, trapezoidal, basket, or<br />

cylindrical in shape and usually weigh less than 50 pounds<br />

(See Figure 5-11). Rectangular and basket-shaped pots<br />

have collapsible bottoms so more pots can be stacked on<br />

deck. Pots are set and retrieved using line haulers and<br />

hydraulic blocks and overhead hoists. Pots are baited with<br />

squid, hake, or herring.<br />
