Vertical Hook and Line<br />

(Also called vertical longline, buoy or<br />

Portuguese longline)<br />

Vertical longline gear is used in Southern California and<br />

Oregon. This hook and line gear involves a single line<br />

weighted at the bottom and buoyed at the surface so as to<br />

fish vertically. Baited hooks are tied to the mainline (See<br />

Figures 5-6). Wind and waves jiggle the buoy, which<br />

wiggles the line and hooks to attract fish. Vertical Hook<br />

and Line gear is used to target rockfish.<br />
