CHAPTER 5<br />

Trip Form-Hauls Instructions<br />

• Haul/Set Number – Document the haul/set<br />

number that corresponds to the Haul Location<br />

information on the front of the form.<br />

• <strong>Observer</strong> Total Catch Estimate (OTC) –<br />

Record the total catch estimate to two decimal<br />

places. Total catch estimate weight is recorded in<br />

pounds.<br />

• Volume of Codend or Trawl Alley/Bin – This<br />

field is blank on fixed gear vessels.<br />

• Density – This field is blank on fixed gear vessels.<br />

• Weight Method – Enter the number for the<br />

weight method used to obtain the <strong>Observer</strong> Total<br />

Catch. The weight methods that may be used for<br />

fixed gear are:<br />

11 – Retained + Discard –<br />

When line is 100% tally sampled.<br />

8 – Extrapolation –<br />

When less than 100% of line is tally<br />

sampled.<br />

Total Hooks/Pots<br />

Always record the<br />

number of pots<br />

/hooks set, not<br />

retrieved in this<br />

column. If gear is<br />

lost, use gear<br />

performance code 5<br />

and document how<br />

much gear is lost in<br />

the comments<br />

sections.<br />

• Total Hooks/Pots – Document the total<br />

number of hooks/pots in the set. Be sure to<br />

record the amount of gear set, not retrieved!!<br />

• Gear Performance – Record one of the<br />

following codes to document gear performance.<br />

1 - No problem.<br />

2 - Pot was in the haul.<br />

5 - Trawl net or codend lost, pot(s) lost, other<br />

gear lost (If pots/hooks have been lost,<br />

document in the comments section how<br />

many were lost.).<br />
