Vessels with 16 or more individuals or that are outside of<br />

boundary borders that have had their keel laid or major<br />

conversion on or after September 15, 1991:<br />

• Vessels >36’ must be equipped with a selfpriming,<br />

power driven fire pump connected to a<br />

fixed piping system.<br />

• Specific requirements regarding locations and<br />

specifications for fire mains, fire hydrants, and<br />

fire hoses can be found at 46 CFR 28.316.<br />

Fireman’s Outfits and Self-contained Breathing Apparatus<br />

CFR 28.205<br />

• Vessels equipped with refrigeration units using<br />

ammonia must be equipped with at least 2 selfcontained<br />

breathing apparatus with spare air<br />

bottles for each.<br />

• If the vessel has more than 49 individuals on<br />

board, at least 2 firemen’s outfits, stowed in<br />

widely separated locations, are required. A<br />

fireman’s outfit consists of one pressure<br />

demand open circuit MSHA/NIOSH approved<br />

self-contained breathing apparatus with a 30<br />

minute air supply and a full face piece, one<br />

lifeline with a belt or suitable harness, one<br />

flashlight, a rigid helmet, boots, gloves,<br />

protective clothing, one fire axe, and a spare air<br />

bottle.<br />
