was necessary before he could begin at his new post.<br />
At one of the provincial centers, Quang Ngai, an<br />
authorization was given to an undergraduate student.<br />
In less than a year he had returned to Bible<br />
School for further training, and an ordained pastor<br />
was sent to this important station. There had been<br />
a good deal of Communism in the province. One of<br />
the uprisings had been at this particular city. The<br />
local Governor used this as a pretext for refusing<br />
to recommend the authorization of the new pastor.<br />
He said that public meetings in that province should<br />
be banned as far as possible. He did not refuse to<br />
allow them entirely, but required that the foreign<br />
missionary be present whenever they were held. This<br />
condition continued for almost a year. The Annamese<br />
pastor lived there; but whenever the mission¬<br />
ary was not in town, police were stationed at the<br />
door of the chapel to see that no meetings were held.<br />
Quang Ngai is about 75 miles from the main station<br />
at Tourane, thus it was not possible for the<br />
missionary to be there every week.<br />
A battalion of France's foreign legion had been<br />
stationed at Quang Ngai to repress the Communist<br />
uprisings. Their barracks were just across the road<br />
from the chapel. Some of the legionnaires were<br />
from Protestant families, and they would come to<br />
the chapel occasionally to talk with the pastor. A<br />
high officer of the legion died. He was a Protestant
