the decree limiting missionary work to those places<br />

that were opened prior to 1932, and said that this<br />

forbade the missionary from going to Chacreng<br />

where there was no chapel. The missionary explained<br />

that he had no intention of opening a chapel.<br />

He planned to visit the homes of some people who<br />

were already Christians. The Governor said that he<br />

had summoned these supposed Christians to his office,<br />

and that they had denied belonging to this foreign<br />

religion.<br />

The missionary proceeded to the village and found<br />

that the facts were quite different. The Christian<br />

leader had indeed been summoned by the Governor,<br />

who threatened to put him in prison unless he denied<br />

his faith. He had refused to do this for he<br />

loved the Lord and loved the missionaries, and<br />

wanted them to continue their visits. That night<br />

several friends of the persecuted Christians accepted<br />

the Saviour, and the missionary went home encouraged,<br />

feeling that the Lord was working in spite<br />

of the opposition of this local Governor.<br />

A few days later the missionary had occasion to<br />

meet the French Resident at Siem Reap, the real<br />

Governor of the entire province. He told him of<br />

the local Governor's action, and learned that the<br />

visit to Chacreng had been reported by the Cam¬<br />

bodian official. The Resident had instructed him not<br />

to hinder the missionaries unless they engaged in
