deceived by such lies were not the better class. In¬<br />

deed, the story that the missionaries were willing in<br />

this way to purchase converts prejudiced the better<br />

class people against the gospel.<br />

One of the missionaries had placards placed on<br />

the door of the chapel denying that he would give<br />

anybody anything to become a Christian. This had<br />

the effect of stopping the stampede, but it gave the<br />

enemies of the gospel another opportunity to make<br />

trouble. The law demanded that all such notices<br />

should have a government stamp on them. The mis¬<br />

sionary, ignorant of this, failed to conform to the<br />

technicality. Someone reported it to an unfriendly<br />

official, and the case was carried to the Governor of<br />

the colony. It was thrown out there, and the missionary<br />

was exonerated, but for a long time afterward<br />

it was held against him that he had had trouble<br />

with the administration. Every once in a while some<br />

troublemaker would bring it up and try to create<br />

difficulty.<br />

At Mytho a man came to the missionary saying<br />

that years before he had obtained a Gospel portion.<br />

He had read it and had been convinced that it taught<br />

the true way of life. He had searched vainly for<br />

someone to teach him more about Jesus. When he<br />

heard that a gospel chapel had been opened, he came<br />

at once to find out if this gospel was the same as that<br />

which he had found in his book. He was greatly<br />

rejoiced to find that it was, and he gladly received
