official in charge was antichristian, and he immediately<br />

wrote the missionary that these papers must<br />

be produced at once, or the chapel doors would be<br />

closed.<br />

The missionary did not know just what to do.<br />

The chapel had been opened a number of years, and<br />

hitherto there had been no difficulty of any kind.<br />

He spread the letter out before the Lord and committed<br />

it to Him. It was a couple of days before<br />

he could get to the government office; and when he<br />

did, the unfriendly official had been changed. The<br />

new man was the opposite type. The missionary explained<br />

the difficulty to him, and told him that when<br />

the work had begun in Cochin-China, the only paper<br />

that had been given the Mission was A general one<br />

authorizing missionaries to work in Saigon and the<br />

surrounding country. The official said a copy of this<br />

statement was all that was required. He sent this<br />

to the local native officials and told them that every¬<br />

thing was in order.<br />

A few years ago the missionary at Saigon felt that<br />

the witness of the gospel should be given somewhere<br />

in the heart of that great heathen city in such a way<br />

that all could hear if they would. The chapel was<br />

on a side street and was not easily within reach of<br />

those who were not looking for it. Property in the<br />

heart of Saigon is expensive, and the Mission had<br />

no funds for such an enterprise. Special prayer was
