TOURANE<br />
AT TOURANE the Lord's working was just as<br />
^ evident. When the government ban was<br />
lifted, the missionaries returned to the little thatched<br />
chapel that had been built in 1913, but whose doors<br />
were closed by official order in 1915. They found<br />
that the whole official attitude had been changed by<br />
God. They were welcomed back to the city and given<br />
complete liberty to proceed with their evangelizing<br />
efforts within its limits. In place of the mayor, who<br />
had been a powerful enemy of the Mission, God had<br />
put an official who became a firm friend of the missionaries,<br />
and who did all in his power to facilitate<br />
the work.<br />
Tourane is not a large city, and the official letter<br />
forbade the missionaries to work outside of it. Since<br />
the missionary could not go to the people, it was<br />
necessary that the people be brought to him. The<br />
Holy Spirit did this; as soon as a chapel was opened,<br />
they came in great numbers.<br />
The missionaries who returned to this post had<br />
not yet had sufficient language study, and were consequently<br />
not in a position to preach intelligently to<br />
the Annamese. But the very fact that the mayor of<br />
