He was a man of influence and wealth, another of<br />
those key men whom the Lord so often finds when<br />
a new station or chapel is opened. He had been a<br />
leader in the religious festivals of his village, and,<br />
incidentally, one who had borne a large share of the<br />
, expense o£ the feasting and drinking which are al¬<br />
ways a part of such festivals. Naturally, as a Chris¬<br />
tian he could have nothing to do with such things;<br />
and when he refused to take his usual place, the vil¬<br />
lagers were not at all pleased.<br />

They tried in every way to persuade him not to<br />
follow these foreigners, as they called the mission¬<br />
aries. When he remained obdurate, they accused<br />
him of refusing to pay his taxes. They claimed that<br />
his quota of the expenses of certain religious rites<br />
was a village tax, and he was thrown into the native<br />
jail and beaten. Then he was taken from one prison<br />
to another, and given a fresh beating at each stage.<br />
Finally the case came to the French judge at Mytho.<br />
Of course he was exonerated, for becoming a Chris¬<br />
tian was not a crime. But the persecution did not<br />
stop there. His fellow villagers found many petty<br />
ways of making life miserable for him; but he had<br />
found the life on a higher plane that enables us to<br />
