The course necessarily takes more time to com-
j
plete, but by regular attendance at the two terms
j
each year, the students acquire a considerable knowl- |
edge of the Word of God. Because of the large !
number of elders in attendance whose goal is to
j
become lay preachers rather than pastors, the school
i
has practically lost that tendency toward profession-
' j
alism which is often the danger point in mission !
Bible Schools. Careful selection is made from
among the graduates, and several of them have gone
;
out to efficient service for Christ in distant provinces.
Most of the others have become pillars in \
their local churches.
This change of the Mission policy with regard to
its workers, and of the Bible School course, coincided
with a changed attitude on the part of the • 1
Government. Indeed, it was God's way of provid- I
ing beforehand for contingencies which He knew
were coming, though the missionaries did not. At 1
the beginning, the Government had been content
to give tacit approval of the activities of the Mis- 1 :
sion, but in 1930, it was decreed that all mission
1
j
stations must have an official authorization.
! j
The required petition was sent to the authorities I,
asking that the Missions work be officially recognized,
but for some reason the reply was long delayed;
and when it came, it was most disappointing.
Fortunately, the Mission in the early days had obtained
sufficient property both at Pnom Penh and at , ,J :
