LENGTHEN<strong>IN</strong>G THE CORDS<br />
TN 1917 a new missionary arrived at Tourane, and<br />
I on Armistice Day, 1918, four more joined the<br />
little band. One of these went to Hanoi where he<br />
was soon joined by another newcomer from America.<br />
These released the senior missionaries of that station,<br />
enabling them to leave for furlough. Two of<br />
the other recruits opened a new station at Saigon,<br />
the capital of Cochin-China, and thus continued the<br />
Mission policy of "spreading out."<br />
Mr. Jaffray and one of the senior missionaries accompanied<br />
the pioneers to Cochin-China. The trip<br />
south was a memorable one. It was made overland<br />
before the excellent road that now runs from the<br />
north to the south of French Indo-China had been<br />
completed. They traveled by automobile, by ricksha,<br />
on foot, and by rail, and across some of the streams<br />
on coolies' backs. An incident occurred on this trip<br />
that again demonstrated how the Lord works with<br />
the missionaries and prepares a way before them.<br />
The four travelers arrived at the City of Quinhon<br />
at midnight, the antiquated Ford jitney bus in which<br />
they had come from Tourane having taken just<br />
eighteen hours to make approximately 185 miles.<br />
