Word. The Lord said that some of the seed that<br />
springs up will be in stony ground where there is not<br />
sufficient soil for the roots, and it will wither away.<br />
Other seed springs up among thorns and is choked<br />
out. But, praise God, there is still other seed that<br />
is in good soil and that brings forth much fruit.<br />
The widespread awakening in the district around<br />
Faifoo was bound to arouse the ire of Satan who always<br />
has ways of stirring up persecution. It was<br />
not long until Mr. Lieu received a summons to appear<br />
before the provincial Governor, an Annamese<br />
official whom he had every reason to consider anti-<br />
Protestant. The policeman who delivered the summons<br />
told him that he was being prosecuted because<br />
he had preached the gospel outside the area where<br />
he was permitted to work. Some of the Christians<br />
were greatly alarmed, for these provincial Governors<br />
have almost absolute authority as far as the ordi¬<br />
nary rank and file of the natives are concerned. But<br />
Mr. Lieu encouraged them and even rejoiced in this<br />
new opportunity to witness for Jesus. For he saw<br />
the occasion as one where he would be privileged to<br />
tell the Governor and his court of the Saviour who<br />
had done so much for him.<br />

in preaching this new religion and turning so many<br />
