income from the ferry was not enough to cover the<br />

extra expense.<br />

Later a band of robbers looted a near-by village,<br />

and the same night one of the ferry-boats disappeared<br />

and was found miles down the river with<br />

some of the loot aboard. It was evident that the<br />

boat had been taken by the robbers; but enemies<br />

thought that here was a good chance to make trouble<br />

for the Christians. They accused the owner of the<br />

boat of having had part in the robbery. He was able<br />

to establish his whereabouts on the night in question<br />

and to show that he was not with the robber<br />

gang, yet the village officials put him in prison on<br />

suspicion. Anonymous letters were then sent to the<br />

higher officials and to the French judge, saying that<br />

this man was dangerous and was guilty of other<br />

crimes as well as the one for which he had been<br />

arrested. The result was that he was held in prison<br />

without trial for eight months.<br />

During this unjust imprisonment, God talked to<br />

him and brought him back to the place of conscious<br />

sweet fellowship with Himself. His testimony was<br />

so bright that several of his fellow prisoners were<br />

saved, and they used to meet daily to worship and<br />

praise God. When our friend's case finally came to<br />

court, it was found that there was not the slightest<br />

evidence of his guilt, and he was released.<br />

All this time the ferry-boats had stood idle, and
