At Hanoi the Lord provided for the Mission a<br />
piece of property in an almost miraculous way.<br />
Money was given for the purpose by the late W. E.<br />
Blackstone, from the Milton Stewart Fund, and land<br />
was purchased in the very heart of the city at a most<br />
reasonable figure, from a government that was none<br />
too friendly. It has proved to be one of the most<br />
strategic situations for evangelism, if not the most<br />
strategic, that could be found in Hanoi. It is now<br />
worth several times what was paid for it. A Mission<br />
press was opened there, and the missionaries, in addition<br />
to preaching the gospel to the great City of<br />
Hanoi, set themselves to the stupendous task of<br />
translating and printing the Bible in the Annamese<br />
language, and of producing the literature necessary<br />
for the church that they were confident God was<br />
about to create.<br />
In reading the Book of Acts, one cannot help but<br />
notice that each church began with a key man whom<br />
the Holy Spirit brought into contact with the apostle<br />
or preacher. Such were saved and became the nuclei<br />
around whom the churches were formed. They were<br />
men or women who commanded respect in the com¬<br />
munity and who were prepared by God to be leaders<br />
in the churches. Such were the Ethiopian eunuch;<br />
Barnabas, the Levite; Cornelius, the centurion; Saul<br />
of Tarsus; Sergius Paulus; Lydia, the seller of pur¬<br />
ple; Apollos; Aquila and Priscilla; the jailer at<br />
