and the other officers asked the Government to give<br />
him a Protestant funeral. There was no French<br />
pastor in the State, so word was sent to Tourane<br />
asking the missionaries to take the service. They<br />
were away at the time, and the only alternative left<br />
for the local Governor was to ask the Annamese<br />
pastor to act. It was a State funeral, and all the<br />
officials, both Annamese and French, were there. The<br />
pastor had an excellent opportunity to give a testi¬<br />
mony for the Lord to a large audience. He did it<br />
so well that those present asked the local govern¬<br />
ment why this pastor, who could conduct a State<br />
funeral, could not be permitted to have Protestant<br />
services in the local chapel. The official had no<br />
recourse but to authorize the work. What the mis¬<br />
sionaries could not accomplish through direct ap¬<br />
peal, the Lord had brought about in His own way.<br />
The work in the city of Hue did not progress as<br />
rapidly as in some places, but there is now a strong<br />
local church there, with some outstanding converts.<br />
Several outstations have been opened in the district.<br />
At one of them the Lord worked in an unusual way<br />
and one that brought much joy to many hearts. The<br />
incident demonstrates the great value of intercessory<br />
prayer so clearly that all those who pray for missionaries<br />
should hear of it.<br />
