The Soul <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Kabbalah</strong><br />
Every form in which <strong>the</strong> male and female principle is not<br />
to be found is not a superior or complete form. The Holy<br />
One, blessed be He, does not establish His abode where<br />
<strong>the</strong>se two principles are not perfectly united; <strong>the</strong> blessing<br />
comes down only where this union exists, as we learn<br />
from <strong>the</strong> following words: "He blessed <strong>the</strong>m and called<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir name (Adam) on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>the</strong>y were created (Genesis<br />
5:2) for <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Man can be given only to a man<br />
and a woman who are united into one being."<br />
We are told in <strong>the</strong> Zohar 86 that <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> Earth is a reflection <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> upper World <strong>of</strong> spirit, echoing <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> Hermes Trismegistos who<br />
says in <strong>the</strong> Emerald Tablet:<br />
In truth certainly and without doubt, whatever is below<br />
is like that which is above, and whatever is above is like<br />
that which is below, to accomplish <strong>the</strong> miracles <strong>of</strong> one<br />
thing. Thus this little world is created according to <strong>the</strong><br />
prototype <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great world.<br />
The Zohar fur<strong>the</strong>r states that when Adam was created he ga<strong>the</strong>red<br />
<strong>the</strong> earthy materials from all over <strong>the</strong> world and made him from it, on<br />
earth. The soul is a compound <strong>of</strong> three grades or degrees. The lowest is<br />
<strong>the</strong> Nephesch, while <strong>the</strong> next is <strong>the</strong> Ruach, and <strong>the</strong> highest is <strong>the</strong><br />
Neschamah. Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two lowest functions, or levels <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, relies<br />
on <strong>the</strong> energies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one above it, so that <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong> man can exist<br />
with <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>the</strong>rein. It is <strong>the</strong> function <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lowest to try and unite<br />
with <strong>the</strong> highest while man is still in material form.<br />
DIVISIONS OF THE SOUL<br />
Guph<br />
Although <strong>the</strong> Nephesch is <strong>the</strong> lowest form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul, in one sense<br />
<strong>the</strong>re is ano<strong>the</strong>r form even lower, Guph, rhe physical body. This is <strong>the</strong><br />
clothing vehicle for <strong>the</strong> next level, <strong>the</strong> Nephesch. The ZOhaT says<strong>of</strong> this: 87<br />
"6 Vol. 2, folio 20Sb.<br />
'7 Vol. 3, folio 76a, from Job 10:11 "Thou hast clo<strong>the</strong>d me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me<br />
with bones and sinews."<br />
