148 The <strong>Kabbalah</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong><br />

and across <strong>the</strong> Abyss) and is <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong> Ministering<br />

Angels oversee, for rhis is <strong>the</strong> heaven that encompasses all<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r heavens. It is <strong>the</strong> heaven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messiah.<br />

6. MAKHON - This roughly translates as "place" and is mentioned<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Talmud as being <strong>the</strong> place where fatal doses <strong>of</strong><br />

rain, snow, or dew (that can destroy vegetation) are kept. It is<br />

<strong>the</strong> heaven <strong>of</strong> discrimination for <strong>the</strong> stores kept here will be<br />

unleashed on <strong>the</strong> ungodly and it closely resembles <strong>the</strong> influence<br />

<strong>of</strong> Geburah which it is allied to. This is very much <strong>the</strong><br />

sphere <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Law and retribution and is said to be <strong>the</strong> abode<br />

<strong>of</strong> Moses, Isaac and Jacob. When punishment is inflicted from<br />

this heaven, <strong>the</strong> Prophets who guard this heaven try to protect<br />

<strong>the</strong> righteous. It is basically a position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Talmud differing<br />

from that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zohar 153 on its functions. 154 Since <strong>the</strong> Heavens<br />

are a reflection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> energies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sephiroth it would<br />

appear that Talmudic consideration seems more appropriate.<br />

5. MAHON - meaning "dwelling" and is related to Tiphareth.<br />

The Talmud says that this heaven is <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministering<br />

angels who sing <strong>the</strong> praise <strong>of</strong> YHVH during <strong>the</strong> day and<br />

rest during <strong>the</strong> night so that <strong>the</strong> songs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day will be with<br />

man during sleep as well. When Moses viewed this heaven he<br />

saw angelic combinations <strong>of</strong> both Fire and Ice working toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

in harmony. These were <strong>the</strong> Erelim,155who are also called<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ishim.P? This harmony, <strong>of</strong> course, relates to <strong>the</strong> Middle<br />

Pillar <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tree <strong>of</strong> Life where <strong>the</strong> polar opposites merge.<br />

4. ZEBUL - meaning "habitation,"157 relates to <strong>the</strong> Sephirah <strong>of</strong><br />

Netzach. According to <strong>the</strong> Talmud, it relates to <strong>the</strong> Celestial<br />

Temple <strong>of</strong>Jerusalem where high sacrificesare made. When Moses<br />

saw this heaven his vision was <strong>of</strong> a Temple with columns <strong>of</strong> red<br />

and green fire and halls <strong>of</strong> sparkling gems. The angelic hosts <strong>of</strong><br />

this level govern all those stars and planets in <strong>the</strong> heavens.<br />

3. SHEHAKIM - meaning "clouds <strong>of</strong> glory" is analogous to <strong>the</strong><br />

Sephirah <strong>of</strong> Hod. Using a modern conception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Talmudic<br />

explanation <strong>of</strong> this heaven it shows us that this is <strong>the</strong> level<br />

where <strong>the</strong> grace and glory <strong>of</strong> God are given to those who<br />

deserve it and is literally <strong>the</strong> "manna from heaven."<br />

ISl Part 1, folio 45a.<br />

154This function differs from that given in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong> rituals which Ma<strong>the</strong>rs took from<br />

Rosenrorh.<br />

155Some versions refer to <strong>the</strong> Kerubim being associated here.<br />

156Provo8:4.<br />

157Kings 8:13.
