Strengths and weaknesses of the basic course<br />
The number of proceedings with cantonal and federal authorities as well as in the courts mean<br />
that a sufficient number of interpreters must be available but the Interpreting Group demands<br />
increased professionalization, a review of the register, and improvement in the standard of<br />
court interpreting. Designed to achieve this balance, the strengths of the basic course are:<br />
• fostering professionalization by bottom-up model<br />
• meeting education requirement for court interpreters<br />
• teaching by experienced interpreters<br />
• including course content based on close cooperation of the Center of Continuing<br />
Education (ZHW) with clients (Interpreting Group representing the courts of the<br />
Canton of Zurich, immigration office, cantonal police, and penal authorities)<br />
Inherent in this quality management process is the risk of losing a disproportionate number of<br />
interpreters because of higher standards and the difficulties in certifying enough court<br />
interpreters within a reasonable period of time. Some weaknesses of the Basic Course at<br />
present are:<br />
• exclusion of rare minority languages<br />
• heterogeneity of groups in the course (with respect to language competence and<br />
specialized knowledge)<br />
• lack of testing of native languages other than German<br />
During the transition period at the moment, both less qualified interpreters and better qualified<br />
interpreters are working in the courts because basic courses and qualifying exams are still in<br />
