have <strong>the</strong> ability to take <strong>the</strong> decisive decision? Did not <strong>the</strong> actions give him priority in <strong>the</strong><br />
scale <strong>of</strong> revelation and in <strong>the</strong> hearts and minds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Companions? Was this not because he<br />
paid all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> costs <strong>of</strong> traveling in <strong>the</strong> company <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messenger, <strong>the</strong> Leader (peace and<br />
blessings be upon him), and plunge with him into <strong>most</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battles, a journey <strong>of</strong> blood,<br />
severed limbs, and skulls? Only people like <strong>the</strong>se are able to understand <strong>the</strong> subject and<br />
appreciate <strong>the</strong> matter and have <strong>the</strong> ability to take <strong>the</strong> decisive decision, about <strong>which</strong> soldiers<br />
say in books <strong>of</strong> war: "The decisive decision is <strong>the</strong> decision from <strong>which</strong> a disastrous outcome<br />
is possible and perhaps probable. However, it must be taken due to o<strong>the</strong>r considerations<br />
and only a true leader can do this." The Umma has been waiting for leaders and decisions<br />
like <strong>the</strong>se since <strong>the</strong> years <strong>of</strong> slaughter. Those leaders <strong>will</strong> only come forth by means <strong>of</strong> this<br />

In an atmosphere like this, we, as well as <strong>the</strong> Umma, <strong>will</strong> be taught to confront <strong>the</strong> terrible<br />
horrors <strong>which</strong> accompany wars with hardness and courage. Even if we swallow some <strong>of</strong> its<br />
bitterness along with <strong>the</strong> degradation <strong>which</strong> has afflicted us, according to <strong>the</strong> jurisprudence<br />
<strong>of</strong> defeat <strong>which</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> courses (<strong>of</strong> Islamic thought) have brought to light we must now<br />
confront those horrors with hardness and strength so that God may permit us to stop <strong>the</strong>m<br />
some day. In one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battles <strong>of</strong> Afghanistan in opposition to <strong>the</strong> Russians, <strong>the</strong> men<br />
ga<strong>the</strong>red <strong>the</strong> women, <strong>the</strong> elderly, and <strong>the</strong> children in a mosque in order to minimize <strong>the</strong><br />
damage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bombing. Bombs fell upon <strong>the</strong> mosque and killed all those who were in it<br />
except for a little girl who remained in <strong>the</strong> lap <strong>of</strong> her grandmo<strong>the</strong>r whose head had been split<br />
open and its contents dangled down in front <strong>of</strong> her granddaughter. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arab<br />
mujahids began to calm <strong>the</strong> child who was raving out <strong>of</strong> fright. The mujahid was crying and
