Zeal may be subdued at first, <strong>the</strong>n wi<strong>the</strong>r, fade away, and die. If it dies, <strong>the</strong> human changes<br />

into a rigid corpse that can do nei<strong>the</strong>r right nor wrong, or, as it says in <strong>the</strong> hadith, his face<br />

was not altered one day out <strong>of</strong> anger—i.e. burning with anger—towards God.<br />

The cowards believe that cowardice is resoluteness.<br />

That is <strong>the</strong> deception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> base nature.<br />

Long patience in <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> unbelief while you are absorbed in your fatal secrecy leads every<br />

day to fur<strong>the</strong>r accommodation with <strong>the</strong> tyrannical Jahiliyya and finally to intimacy with it,<br />

<strong>which</strong> distorts <strong>the</strong> innate nature and corrupts one's vision.<br />

Secrecy in <strong>the</strong> missionary activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (peace and blessings be upon<br />

him) was for a short period <strong>of</strong> time and it was quickly made public. Secrecy and caution are<br />

necessary with <strong>the</strong> military company—"Take your precautions; <strong>the</strong>n move forward in<br />

companies" (Qur'an 4:71). Secrecy and caution are not what lead to paralysis, anxiety, and<br />

death.<br />

Likewise, battle and jihad in <strong>the</strong> path <strong>of</strong> God is what separates <strong>the</strong> leaders (from <strong>the</strong> rest) and<br />

brings forth men <strong>through</strong> sacrifice. The destiny <strong>of</strong> Abu Bakr among Muslims, inasmuch as<br />

his election was by pseudo-consensus, was not a coincidence or haphazard.<br />

Ra<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

momentous events brought forth Abu Bakr and sacrifice distinguished him (from o<strong>the</strong>rs)<br />

and situations, trials, and calamities raised him up. Thus, `Umar said that on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong><br />

T<strong>abu</strong>k [one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battles that took place during <strong>the</strong> lifetime <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prophet] he had brought
