Soybean (grains and bran) The (public) Corex of Paranaguá handled 8,745,021 tonnes of soybeans, a volume 6.5% higher than the one reported in the previous period and almost 3 times higher than the volume reported by the port of São Francisco do Sul (SC), in the second position, which handled 2,929,072 tonnes in the period, 22.2% more than the movement in the previous period. Increases in the movement of soybean reflect the tax policy in Argentina, which is surcharging exports of its products, thereby stimulating Brazilian exports. Among leased or private terminals, the leader was Corex Santos, which handled 6,572,555 tonnes of soybeans between July 2008 and June 2009, with a volume 66% higher than the previous period and almost twice as much as the volume of PT Tubarão (ES), which handled 3,328,687 tonnes of soybeans over the same period, with a volume 248% higher than the one reported between July 2007 and June 2008. In the third position, the Tergrasa terminal in Rio Grande (RS) handled 2,650,276 tonnes, with a decrease of 28.6% over the previous period. The PT Cotegipe, located in the Bay of Todos os Santos, had an increase of 106% in the movement of soybean in relation to the previous period. This significant increase was achieved by the transfer of the shipment of grain from the west of Bahia through the port of Ilhéus to the private terminal in order to provide less road movement and better infrastructure and equipment. The public port of Bahia had a decrease of 91% over the previous period. As for the average sheet, which indicates tonnes of soybean handled per day, the public pier of Paranaguá (Corex) reported an average of handling of 28,462 tonnes per day and led the ranking of public ports between July 2008 and June 2009, ahead of the public pier of São Francisco do Sul, which handled 16,237 tonnes per day, in an average 6% lower than the one reported between July 2007 and June 2008. Among leased or private terminals, the PT Tubarão (ES) led the ranking by handling 37,684 tonnes per day between July 2008 and June 2009, in an average 75.8% higher than the one reported in the previous period. The second position was occupied by TGG Santos, with an average handling of 26,065 tonnes per day, 62.5% more than the average from July 2007 to June 2008. The third position was occupied by Corex Santos, with 14,525 tonnes per day, in an average 19.4% higher than the one reported in previous period. The lowest average delay time between the public ports was reported at the port of Ilhéus (BA), where ships had a one-hour delay to dock, on average. The second position was occupied by the port of Santos, with an average of 8 hours, and, the third one was occupied by the port of Paranaguá (Multiple Use), where ships had an average delay time of 3 days and 16 hours to dock. In São Francisco do Sul and Paranaguá (Corex), the average delay time for docking was 3 days and 22 hours and 4 days and 8 hours, respectively. In the case of the port of Paranaguá, the delay time was high due to the restrictions to night shipping, which occurs due to lack of maintenance on buoys and lack of maintenance dredging in the port’s canal. Among leased or private terminals, the leaders of the ranking were the PT of Granel Química, in Mato Grosso do Sul, and the PT Oleoplan in Rio Grande do Sul, where the ships docked in less than one hour on average, as in the previous period. The Tergrasa terminal, in second place, had an average time of 16 hours for docking against to 15 hours in the previous period and, in the third position, the Bunge terminal, in Rio Grande, reported an average of 23 hours, 34.3% less than the time reported between July 2007 and June 2008. The price of port services practiced in the (public) Corex of Paranaguá was the lowest price per tonne of soybean handled, at R$7.80, almost 38% lower than the price applied at the port of São Francisco do Sul (SC) and 44.6% less than the price applied at the port of Ilhéus (BA). Among the terminals, the lowest price was charged by Corex Santos, at R$4.88, a price 5.6% lower than the one charged by the Cargill terminal in Santos, and 56.7% lower than the one charged by Tergrasa, in Rio Grande (RS). 17
