Fertilizers
Prior to the world crisis (September 2008),
importers of fertilizers had accumulated
large stocks, as prices were rising, given
the warming of the global economy and favorable
prices of agricultural commodities. However,
with the start of the crisis, companies in possession
of these stocks failed to pass on these products
to farmers, and thus had large losses, reducing
imports.
The port of Paranaguá (PR) handled
2,429,692 tonnes of fertilizer between July 2008
and June 2009, representing a decrease of
48.8% over the previous period. Still it led the
ranking of public ports, handling more than any
of the terminals. The second position was occupied
by the port of Rio Grande (RS), with
978,057 tonnes, representing a decrease of
22.7% over the previous period. The third one
was the port of Aratu (BA), which handled
514,881 tonnes of fertilizer, with a decrease of
33.1% over the period between July 2007 and
June 2008.
Among terminals, the Yara Fertilizantes terminal
led the ranking, handling 1,775,873
tonnes, with a decrease of 51.2% in relation to
the period between July 2007 and June 2008.
The second position was occupied by the PT Fospar
in Paranaguá, with 1,564,945 tonnes, representing
a decrease of 33.9% over the previous
period. In third, TMG Santos (SP) handled
719,185 tonnes, with a decrease of 47%.
The port of São Francisco do Sul (SC) had the
best performance in the average sheet by handling
11,292 tonnes of fertilizer between July
2008 and June 2009, in an average 185.6%
higher than the one reported between July 2007
and June 2008. The second position was occupied
by the port of Salvador, with 6,014 tonnes
per day (202% more than in the previous period),
and the third position was occupied by the Multiple
Use (public) terminal of the port of
Paranaguá, with 5678 tonnes per day (13.2%
more than in the previous period).
The sea terminal Inácio Barbosa, managed by
Vale, in Sergipe, reported an average of 9,748
tonnes of fertilizer handled per day, leading the
ranking in the terminal segment, ahead of the PT
Fospar, which reported an average of 8,787
tonnes per day. The third position was occupied
by TMG, in Santos (SP), which handled 6,091
tonnes per day, with a decrease of 14.5% in relation
to the average reported between July 2007
and June 2008.
Navegantes Pier in Porto Alegre had the lowest
delay time among public piers, with an average
of less than one hour, followed by the Port of
Pelotas, with an average time of 2 hours and Recife,
with an average of 11 hours for docking.
Among terminals, Serra Morena, in Porto Alegre,
and the PT Oleoplan reported an average
delay time of less than 1 hour, whereas vessels
took 61 hours to dock, on average, in the Yara
Fertilizantes terminal and up to 73 hours in the
PT Fospar in Paranaguá (PR).
The lowest price for port services charged
per tonne of fertilizer among public ports in
2008 was R$11.30, an amount charged by
the port of Santos (SP), 18.2% lower than the
price charged by the port of Rio Grande (RS), in
the second position, and 70.4% lower than the
price charged by the Port of Aratu (BA), the
highest price. Among terminals, the lowest
price was charged by the Yara Fertilizantes terminal,
at R$8.49, 20.3% lower than the price
charged by the Tefer/TMG terminal in Santos,
in the second position, and 56.6% lower that
the Fospar terminal in Paranaguá (PR), which
had the highest price.
