Friends of the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong> <strong>Gardens</strong> Cranbourne Inc.<br />

The Friends of the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong> <strong>Gardens</strong> Cranbourne had another very successful<br />

year with tours to Anglesea (Victoria) and, in conjunction with the Melbourne Friends, a<br />

tour to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and <strong>Gardens</strong> of Southern England. Me<strong>mb</strong>ers<br />

with the necessary skills helped organise and lead these tours. In the case of interstate<br />

and overseas trips, the assistance of a travel company was required which, in itself,<br />

necessitated considerable input from me<strong>mb</strong>ers.<br />

The Activities Committee developed and oversaw another year of successful activities<br />

including Discovery Days, workshops and special guest speakers. These activities<br />

provided a diverse selection of activities for me<strong>mb</strong>ers.<br />

Me<strong>mb</strong>ership nu<strong>mb</strong>ers gradually increased and are now well over 600. It is hoped that<br />

the proposed removal of entry fees to the Australian Garden will see an increased<br />

nu<strong>mb</strong>er of me<strong>mb</strong>ers visiting the Australian Garden.<br />

One of the key projects this year was the pending relocation of the Friends’ facilities<br />

following the redevelopment of the Depot at RBG Cranbourne. With possible sites still<br />

being discussed, the Friends will continue to work with RBG Cranbourne staff and<br />

look forward to the finalisation of development plans.<br />

Once again, significant emphasis was placed on the retention of funds raised in order<br />

to contribute to projects including the relocation of the Maud Gibson Room and its<br />

associated structures. Funds were raised through a nu<strong>mb</strong>er of avenues including the<br />

increasingly popular <strong>Botanic</strong>al Illustrators Classes run by Margaret Holloway, plant<br />

sales of Australian plants to Friends’ me<strong>mb</strong>ers, and plant sales to the public at three<br />

plant sales over the year.<br />

The Friends also continued to propagate and provide plants free of charge for RBG<br />

Cranbourne’s Education programs and the City of Casey’s revegetation projects.<br />

Surpluses resulted from the Activities Program and the <strong>Annual</strong> Dinner. As with all<br />

activities, the financial benefit is often secondary to the support provided to RBG<br />

Cranbourne.<br />

Friends of the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong> <strong>Gardens</strong>, Melbourne Inc.<br />

The Friends were pleased to be able to make grants in excess of $153,000 to the<br />

<strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong> <strong>Gardens</strong> Melbourne during the year. These included $90,000 towards<br />

the Working Wetlands project, $11,006 for new lighting for Domain House which is<br />

used for exhibitions (and leased from the City of Melbourne by the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong><br />

<strong>Gardens</strong> Board Victoria), $15,000 for a Plant Labelling Identification project, $12,385<br />

to upgrade the Audio Visual equipment in Mueller Hall at the Herbarium, and a total of<br />

$12,055 for staff scholarships awarded to Trevor Gallagher, Chris Jenek, Dermot<br />

Molloy, Ollie Sherlock and Timothy Wall.<br />

Classes in <strong>Botanic</strong>al Illustration continued to maintain popularity. Ten classes a week<br />

continued to run in eight-week terms and beginners’ workshops were held during<br />

each school holiday break. A nu<strong>mb</strong>er of special interest botanical workshops were<br />

also held during the year.<br />

The Growing Friends group held two successful public plant sales, with the spring sale<br />

coinciding with the Spring Open Day at RBG Melbourne and raising a total of $35,935.<br />
