at RBG Melbourne, and<br />

d. continuing with the RBG Melbourne Friends’<br />

Helping Hands Volunteer Program, where<br />

volunteers provide horticultural assistance at<br />

Eastern Lodge, Gate Lodge and E Gate Lodge<br />

at RBG Melbourne.<br />

c. Implementation of the GA program at<br />

RBG Melbourne in Septe<strong>mb</strong>er <strong>2010</strong>, following an<br />

earlier recruitment and training program, of<br />

approximately 25 volunteers, whose primary goal<br />

is to enhance the visitor experience through<br />

provision of visitor information and interpretation<br />

activities. (See also Specific Outcome 6b.)<br />

d. RBG Melbourne Horticulture branch worked<br />

closely with volunteers from the Helping Hands<br />

program to maintain plants and complete<br />

development works at Eastern Lodge, Gate<br />

Lodge and E Gate Lodge. The landscape<br />

aesthetics of these lodges have been improved<br />

by the planting of hardy species that will cope<br />

with prolonged dry periods.<br />

Specific Outcome 16<br />

(Relating to Corporate Plan Action 14)<br />

Review the retail operations structure and<br />

commence the development and implementation<br />

of the new retail strategy to enhance the<br />

<strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong> <strong>Gardens</strong>’ retail position.<br />

Action 9<br />

Foster and enhance existing relationships with<br />

Government, community organisations, educational<br />

institutions, and industry bodies. Increase our focus<br />

on programs and projects with a high level of<br />

community engagement and an emphasis on<br />

responsible resource management, in particular<br />

the protection of Australia’s biodiversity.<br />

During <strong>2010</strong>–11, many of the recommendations<br />

associated with the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong> <strong>Gardens</strong>’ Retail<br />

Strategy and corresponding visual merchandising<br />

initiatives, products and product mixes were<br />

successfully implemented. The recommendations<br />

aimed to create a unique selling identity for The<br />

<strong>Gardens</strong> Shops at both sites and re-align the shops’<br />

operations with the objectives of the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong><br />

<strong>Gardens</strong>. Some of the outcomes achieved included<br />

integration of retail operations with <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Botanic</strong><br />

<strong>Gardens</strong>’ activities and objectives, implementation<br />

of clearly defined retail objectives and performance<br />

measures, significant improvements in visual<br />

merchandising processes and practices (including<br />

the use of external space to attract customers), new<br />

product purchasing guidelines, transition into new<br />

products and product mixes in a timely manner,<br />

and implementation of forward product and<br />

promotion planning.<br />

On 23 March <strong>2011</strong>, the RBG Cranbourne Public<br />

Programs branch, in partnership with the City of<br />

Casey and its Linking Early Years Department,<br />

successfully staged a Woodlands Walk at the<br />

Woodland Picnic Area. This program focused<br />

on early childhood literacy and was attended by<br />

246 children and their families.<br />
